Hi all,
I'm real new to welding and got a project on at the moment!(mk1 mr2)
just brough a clarke 100e mk2 off ebay, adjusted all the wire feed perfectly today and its working well.
just wondered what the best think to attach my ground cable to....
i will welding a nut onto the original sumpnut that the last owner littlerally raped! its basically a pefect chewed circle.
i know i just gota tack the weld on,
grounding it out is my issue, as I'm not sure best place to put the ground clamps. (i have disconected the battery for safety!
any comment welcomed,,

Any part of the engine should be fine as long as its clean metal.

Thoroughly clean the sump as well before you start. And make sure there are no fuel leaks also .......

Whilst on the subject of earthing. I got fed up when welding on the bench vice of the clamp getting in the way,not fitting right, or just plain falling off, i made up a lead bolted direct to the vice,and plugging straight into my welder. Made it out of an old jump lead, and a welding plug from Ebay. Works a treat. Just make sure its long enough to enable the welder to reach comfortably.

Well you have two issues with earthing the welder that I'm aware of.
1. Making the welder run through vehicle wiring by putting your welding clamp in a place where the current finds it easier to go through wires than the vehicle chassis. This does not last long, normally the second you pulse the welder the wire it is running through turns to ash instantly. You only make this mistake once.
2. Making yourself the earthing route for the welder. Just be aware this can happen. I've managed to do that once and it was unpleasent. Don't ask me how it happens as I have no idea... just be aware that it's a possibility.

Can't you just take the sump plug out and do the welding on the bench?

^ Maybe the welding a nut on is so he can get the sump plug out?
My preference when attaching the welder earth lead to the car is to use a pair of molegrips clamped to the body (or in this case, engine) and attach the earth clamp to the grips.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

^^^I think if he could take the sump plug out he wouldn't be needing to weld a nut on.
You'll need to hold the nut with something like a pair of mole grips, I'd put the clamp on them.

This is basically what we do, except we hold the nut with the earth clamp, then weld the nut to the sump plug, our earth clamp is a professional one though, and would use a set of mole grips on the nut, that way you don't need to earth the sump, as the earth runs via the nut your welding on

On the subject of earth clamps, the ones that come with the machine are usually pretty poor quality. I'd upgrade with one bought from somewhere like BOC much more beefy

I used a good quality jump lead clamp on mine been on there 20 years or more now.
