Someone's done it. I remember reading in Retro Car's "Lock Up" a few years ago about a bloke renting a barn/ farm workshop, living there in a converted bus, and also storing and working on motors there... loads of VWs it was. I think some of you will know who I'm talking about. Also, I met someone at Bug Jam last year in an LT camper who told me he was living on farmland (in the midlands?) in a Winnebago, and owned several more LTs parked there, along with a few other LT owners doing the same thing on the same farm... This sound like a bleedin dream situation! This is exactly what I am looking into doing, as rent is sky high round here and I can only afford 'normal' housing that lacks the space for my ever growing fleet! I already have a monster LT coachbuilt I'm tidying up for living in- Pretty ugly right? Anyone here doing this or similar? Or any information on those already doing it, and can give me some tips on how I can follow suit??? I'm near Sudbury in Suffolk by the way, and if anyone else would be interested in trying to sort something like this anywhere around the essex/suffolk area maybe we can work together? I've already got one mate on board (also with an LT!) Cheers! ;D

Years ago I wanted to turn my bungalow into a house which meant I would have had to find somewhere else to live for a while. I already had a caravan so thought simply I'd move into that. Oh no - not allowed unless planning permission obtained and granted ! Seems you can use a caravan etc as another bedroom to a property without permission but you aren't allowed to live in it nor even use as a bedroom if there isn't a "main" property.

As said above, if I had the land and an LT like yours, I'd just go for it. Proceed until apprehended...
I know a couple of guys who live in caravans/portacabins/campers south of Edinburgh (but about twenty minutes commute) because they live on land that they rent (or lease or whatever) from the Forestry Commission and have permission to live onsite because they have a duty to maintain the land that they have. They have "proper" jobs in the city but are also working artists who work with wood from their bit of land, they got the land because they maintain it and earn a living from it.

Cheers!
Yeah, to be honest the specific legality is not something I'm particularly concerned with...
Hmm, just need some land!

Apparently, if there's a whole bunch of you, you can park up on any farmland, public carpark or village green, stay there for a while, before moving off and leaving your rubbish behind...
I had a couple of mates who lived on a campsite when we were students cos they couldn't find a flat.

I'm going to be doing this once the weather warms up so I have been doing some research, more for nomadic purposes than for staying in one place but some of it is relevant.
You can stay for a total of 28 days of the year on land on which you have permission to be on provided your living in a temporary structure that has no connection to the "grid" even if it does not have planning permission to be lived on.
Now obviously if you are out of sight and not being watched then your 28 days can start from whenever you get asked about it by the authorities.
Do not underestimate the possibilities of being found out though, nosy neighbours wont hesitate to report overstays or "suspicious" activities just in case you are a traveler and the situation has got worse since the two guys who built hidden houses hit the news.
If you can be seen by any of your neighbours then bin the camper van and get a coach or truck to convert, they are far far better for stealth camping especially if you run tinted windows hidden by black stripes on the paint work.
I have a camper van because I want to be able to use camp sites on weekends, but you are far more likely to get noticed living in a camper or a caravan, an old truck or coach could just be parked in your yard for rebuild or storage, plus unless your camper van is properly winterised it wont be very ice in the cold weather and stripping it down to add insulation is load sof work, your better off doing that first as part of a conversion.
Oh and I may be interested in a joining your venture, but i need to stay down in the lower half of Essex for work, I don't earn enough to commute to far every day.

Cheers for the info popuptoaster! I thought it was something like 10 months a year you can stay in a temporary structure? But maybe that's one connected to the grid.. like a beach home/holiday hut type deal.
Anyway, nice one, I'll keep looking and researching....

Both of these sites have lots of useful info (i am registered on both) I suggest you ask on there for specific info, there is a nomadic living section on UK hippy that will help. I suspect this thread will get locked shortly. www.ukhippy.com/stuff/forum.phpwww.wildcamping.co.uk/

A girl I knew lived in her Commer campervan for 6-7 years. I think she's moved into a communal house somewhere in Wales now but she seemed happy enough in the camper.

My in laws live on a holiday chalet park and have to vacate for one month a year, so I think it's just due to planning for the "permanant" structure and would be the Samford a temporary structure. Also be wary when arguing with the authorities, my mate put.up a prefab barn and said twas always there, bloke from the planning just got a pic from google earth proving otherwise and he had to take it down. Stay friends with the neighbors is your best bet, also get two goats and a few chickens then you need to be on the land to look after them. It's how all the gypsy's around my way get to live on land.

Even if you have livestock or trees/crops to look after you still can't stay for long legally, the planning guys are not stupid. What peoples mates or the gypos up the road do and what they SHOULD do are to different things and you need to know whats legal because if you do get caught you'll be screwed, mainly because they will keep a very close eye on the property after that so you'll be homeless.

Another option may be to rent a barn on a farm and park the camper/caravan inside? Should leave room to work on your cars and keeps the living quarters out of sight and protected in the winter.

Ooh er, why will this get locked? Erm, as a change of pace then, anyone have any pics of the "Lock Up" of the bloke I mentioned in the first post? Pretty awesome set up if I remember right, I think he lived in a Leyland National bus or similar (?) with his girlfriend and their housemate/busmate, and I remember he had a good few dubs in various states, including a beach buggy and a ghia or two. The dude's set up was pretty much ideal. What a total hero. Here's an unrelated picture of a New Zealand house bus as a token of thanks!

Id do this if i was you lifes too short i bet you would love it , it would be easier if there was a few of you tho and also i have worked on sites where people live in caravans/statics/campervans full time and they just have to find somwhere to live one month of the year this is %100 the law and you don't have to pay all them silly bills council tax e.t.c you can still sign on if you need too (my mum lives in a caravan full time and she gets job seekers) but obviously it would be better if you saved enough cash so you didnt need to sign on.You could use a PObox for your mail and try and buy a few chickens for eggs and some basic land for some veggies e.t.c even brew your own wine/beer and make some cash on side doing bits of work or just try and find a full time/part time job =) you would be doing what you love to do and not been taken hostage by this media obsessed/material world we live in lol live like hippy s and all that ! =) I'm sure its not as easy as iv made out but if you don't give it a go you will probably spend the rest of your life wondering WHAT IF? =)

I spent 6 months living in a (V.small : campervan down south when I was in my 20's. Living / sleeping in it at various places and driving to work every day ;D Stripped interior with all seats out, fitted a captains chair for driver, fixed single bed behind + small gas cooker = sorted ;D Got on good terms with the local sports center who had occasional vandal problems, I got free parking and they got free overnight security Found it worth getting a membership for the local gym/pool, good way to relax and they always have decent showers Had a choice of several places to park up so could wake up with a view over the reservoir or canals during the week and be a short walk back from town on a weekend Worth keeping your eyes open to see where truckers park up, I often found we were parked in the same spots Not too bad in summer down south, expect to get VERY cold in the winter pics to follow if I can find the photo album and a scanner
