As it's the time of year when I look back and make plans for the coming year, I thought I'd ask what folk think of the direction things are going in the UK in recent years. I appreciate this may not be the right place for it (mods - please feel free to move or delete if you think it's too off-topic  ) This isn't at all related to politics, more about the way society is changing  I find I'm often starting to type things up (build thread updates, new topics for readers other modification, etc), then find I'm not at all comfortable publishing what I've done and how, in case it comes back to bite me in the future  Curious if this is a sign that I'm getting (have got?) paraniod or if it's just that there is so much new legislation coming into all walks of life that it's far too easy to unintentionally end up on the wrong side of the law. Hopefully this also explains why some requests for updates have been ignored and large chunks have been missed out of various postings  As apologies, have some retro goodness to make ammends ;D    Tatra (possibly factory issue - not modified  )  |

Your not alone.I too feel the same but just thought it was me being the techno dinosaur i am.
Pre internet you`d have told your friends and that was it.You`d have just got on with things as you saw fit.
These days everyone feels the need to post every in and out of their lives on the web.God only knows why.
I think these days its very easy,too easy,for the normal joe in the street to break a law just going about his or her daily life.Theres a law for every bloody thing these days and its all just built up to take more of your hard earned off you any way they can.
Only put up online what you`d tell a stranger.
Whinge over and in before the lock all in one.

Oh boy, I'm getting paranoid too. I've just typed a great long diatribe in support of you and against the growing "Big Brother" (not that TV drivel) culture we live in. But then I deleted it, fearful that someone might read it and mark me down as a dissident!

If you're building legal cars then publishing photos online could be helpfull in the future, if the laws get even tighter then being able to prove your car was built in 2012 may keep it exempt from some reg that would otherwise see it off the road.
Of course you wouldn't be building illegal cars on purpose would you?

I don't post alot of things... Mix of an evil Ex And the fact that i don't want to take photos of cars/bikes and my house be visable..I worry that a local scrunty chav will recognise the place online and rob the place when I'm out  Am getting paranoid but thats exactly what happened to a mates garage.. Ebay sale ad recognised resulted in a Gsx1100 getting pinched along with a couple of very expensive vintage bmx's |

Don't take this the wrong way, but you all sound like old people It's common to be parnoid of a medium that people seem to eager to give away their personal information on, but the truth is - you'll more than likely see this topic in 20 years time and realise that not much has changed in the world and that nobody really gives a hoot what you post online. I mean if you're posting up pictures of your dangerous vehicle then you're just asking for trouble, but the truth is that people aren't employed to sit on forums all day finding out what dangerous cars there COULD be so you'll get away with it 99,999 times out of 100,000. You're more likely to get found out at a VOSA checkpoint. |

Seeing as i've just had 10 days off over the christmas period,and its been mainly hammering down with rain, i've watched more tv than has been good for me. (bear with me)
Only have Freeview, so been watching all those 'worldsmostdangerousstupiddarwinawardneedinginbreddisasterwaitingtohappen' type programmes ......
But i must say, it seems if you live in the States,Aus or eastern europe, you can have a damm sight more fun than you can here, you can build and run stuff that would givwe VOSA a triple heart attack ...
Where has our ability to 'have fun gone? I don't who's to blame , ...... the EU or the 'in the name of health and safety' brigade ...

Just because this stuff is on telly doesn't make it legal, go look at the restrictions on car modding in Australia or California properly, we have way more freedom than they do.

Perhaps i should have worded some of my post differently ...
We/I have friends/family in the States/Canada/Aus and NZ ....and they say they can get away with much more than we can ... plus one of em said they can do virtually anything on thier own property, so some wierd and wonderfully useless stuff gets done!!
Although i suppose if you're miles from anywhere in Aus, with no close neighbours,you're pretty much able to get away with anything .....

For me its all about money...or peoples building obsession with it. We, as a nation (in my eyes) are more interested in what people have rather than them.
Sooooo. Successive "administrations" have started to charge accordingly, as then "we" can say it cost me X to do this (therefore "I" had it to spend). Without opening another sva/iva sore the cost is really heavy ( I believe all government services should be just that,a service and not a profitable enterprise) I know it takes X hours blah blah and that needs to be covered but.
The social networks thrive on giving most people a medium to show off on, and then sell on their details so sharks can bombard them with more money draining sales pitches.
But! As a whole we are all living alot better standard of living. Something is going right.Isn't it?
Another thought. Must declare 1st,I/we/family have NZ residency. I strongly preach (oh religious slant) that its people that make an area. I am a southerner by birth.Kent and SE London, and moved up north in my early 20's. The people are better/nicer up here.Fact. Which brings me back to NZ. How does a country our size with only half the population of London provide a standard of living the same as/better than ours (IMO). I think its because they aren't overly materialistic as we have quickly become.....

I agree, people are surprised and seem to take pity at the fact we run 4 very old vehicles instead of 1 new shiny one each, we got good jobs, nice house. What went wrong?! :-0
