Just read through this.
Excellent work! We have a 72 SE5a that had initially been sat a few years and hated any kind of remedial action, but it's coming over to the right side of thinking slowly!
Keep on keeping on! Are you passive plating your bits yourself?

Ah yes, just scoured ebay. They seem A worthwhile investment!
Wonder what size bucket I'd need to stick the SE5a chassis in...

Even though ive got a big barn with a hardstand, i don't half envy your indoor space. Must be fantastic to be out of the wind and rain. Super work on this, i cant wait to own a car with a chassis. So much easier to repair the running gear.

Don't be too jealous, it still let's rain in and it has no insulation. I think we got down to -7 degrees 2 winters ago. Still, it's better than the driveway which I worked on till 2.5 years ago

Bit more progress this afternoon: I got the headlining out, albeit in many pieces And I got the heater fully assembled after plating the remaining items a few evenings ago. It was a big struggle getting it all together, now it has the insulation in it. I also sealed the outlet plates/blanking plates and fan because I was amazed to find that the fan had a 5mm gap most the way round it, so some air would've escaped. I also replaced the wires because they didn't look all that fresh. I'm sure a lot of you are thinking why I've gone to all that effort for something as minute as a heater. Simply because both mine had rusted after only being in use for 15 years and standing after that. And when the standard heater is as rubbish as this, you need to try and make it as efficient as possible

A bit more progress tonight. The engine mounts, side cover and the carb heatshield were painted. I then started on the sill metalwork. I tried to get it all out from underneath, but the GRP was thicker there than on the topside  So I got the angry grinder out. As a result, it ain't pretty, but it's the only way I'll get it all out. I need to take the doors off to finish the job, but the appropriate socket is in the Sabre  In other news, I'm now officially bankrupt due to the purchase of these: 15x6 and perfect candidates for spectra chrome if Dr Japs finally get it ordered

Am I talking to myself here or what? if i may be so bold, i have followed your thread with interest (along with the other scim threads) the pictures and work are amazing, major kudos. but i feel as if i don't actually know whats going on? does that make sense? like why has the ss1 got a nissan engine? where is the 2.6 straight six from, i thought they were 3 litre essex ? the bit of chassis you cut out and welded, what is it, and why did you replace it ? just that sort of thing, a bit of narrative maybe?

I'm with Darren, a lot of people would benefit from the thinking behind the moves you make. Thats the kind of insight we love here. See my threads in the sig for an idea, and i'm by no means perfect compared to some contributers on the forum!

Ah ok, that makes sense Because I'm a member on the Scimitar forum, my main progress thread is posted there (the same with the other Scim threads) so I just copy and paste it here and because the scim forum is full of scim owners (funnily enough) there's no need to expain things. So, to fill in a few blanks: The SS1 had a Nissan CA18ET in it because that's what it came with from the factory Same with the Coupe. You're right in that they did use Essex engines, but not till 1967, when the straight six stopped being made(there were a lot of other changes with it, such as suspenion re design, interior re design, subtle body changes etc) Only the first 297 Coupes had the straight six, so is rarer than the V6 as well as more desirable and valuable (still worth peanuts though) Hope that makes some sense, I'll put some more detail in the next update (later on) Cheers Guys

Then in the 80s they went on to use the 2.8 cologne engine In the SE6B and the GTC. And Middlebridge had the 2.9i
The small sports cars had 1300/1400/1600 CVH engine with the 2.0 type 9 gearbox. And as the one above the Nissan Sylvia turbo 1.8 engine. With the Mk 2 Sabre (the last of the reliant cars having the 1.4 K series rover engine on to a type 9 box as above.

Tonight's work: Some background info - Reliant bonded some metal in the body so the GRP didn't dis form while it was curing. This metal work is underneath the door sill tread plates and behind the sill area. It is very common for this metal to rust and "blow out" the sills and warp them. Luckily, the sills haven't warped on this one, but I wanted to take the metal out so it can't happen. The metal wasn't really in there for strength, so I won't put new metal in, but I will layer some fibreglass behind the body where the metal was. So, remove and assessing the damage: This is what fell out before I'd really started So it was all cut out All the rust Then I started to put the fibreglass back together. I've never done any fibreglass or bodywork before, so its trial by fire And I've got the other side to do now...

I've no idea tbh. I've just requested "How to restore fibreglass bodywork" at the library.
I think the process would be layer some fiberglass up on the back of it all to strengthen it then use a filler with fibreglass in it from the top and finish it with high build primer and sand

I could, but as I said, the steel was there purely for when the GRP was curing. There are several cars that have run without anything in the sills and are fine. Remember I will be adding several layers of GRP under the sill A little bit of work this evening: I drilled a load of ally strips and started attaching them to the passenger side sill. After "learning from" (cocking up) the drivers side, my plan is to create all the holes for the Ally strips BEFORE cutting the GRP out so when the top layer goes back in, it'll go straight into the correct place (in theory)

What a sh*t evening. I got the metalwork out of the passenger sill but because it was so well bonded and the outer layer of GRP was so thin, there is a fair bit of damage that now needs to be repaired (add it to the already large list of body defects) At least I still have some skin left on my hands, though most the cuts (and probably my lungs) are full of fibreglass dust. I'm sure a good 10 years has been cut off my life expectancy since starting the bodywork  I left in such a rush, I forgot photos again. On the plus side, my method of putting the Ally strips before cutting seems to have paid off Oh, and thanks to Geoff P, I will soon have a handbrake bracket to replicate. The original bracket was missing so I need to make another

Excellent thread & great work - I too own an SS1 (1800 Zetec powered - there's a build thread on here somewhere & also over on Scimweb) & agree that they're an excellent drive indeed. It's a shame you had to sell yours but needs must & all that - I also like the Se5 & the coupe so there's plenty to keep me interested - keep up the good work & I look forward to more installments

Scimitars came with a triple SU, made by Reliant and therefore, incredibly rare. They make a huge difference to the engine though. A while ago, I started stripping it all apart and tonight I went back to it. I can't finish stripping and rebuilding the carbs because I have no money and the rebuild kits are £££ So the linkage components are starting to be cleaned and plated:

With the help of some money and a lot of luck, I've managed to get some more engine parts: A NOS timing chain (Very rare. I'm suprised I got it so cheap, considering) A set of NOS hepolite piston rings (again, very rare) And the company I ordered the main bearings from in the first week of September finally got their in gear and I received the, today. Unfortunately, they only sent out enough for a 4 cylinder, despite me asking specifically for 6 cylinder :dh I also rang John Wade about a cam regrind. He's going to make a custom profile to what I want then The cam will go to Kent to be done. I'm also looking into making new rocker shafts including new rockers and replacing the springs with tubing to keep the rockers in the right place. The original design is very poor and leads to the the shafts and rockers wearing very quickly. The main problem is that the oil can't get in there very easily because Ford only drilled 1mm holes for the oil to get through. I'm looking at totally re designing it all because every part of the system is inadequate tbh. I've also started refurbing another set of dashboard gauges. I've no pictures yet, but they're already looking a lot better Tonight's work is plating all the sump bolts, side cover screws and the water pump pulley bolts.
