Was wondering, is anyone using their pre '60 mot exempt car on the road without taking the "optional" mot??
Getting any greif from the rozzers? Spot checks ect?
I wanna use my desoto but work is manic and I haven't got the time to take it for a test, basically the only day I have free is Sundays.
The cars fine and should pass a test okay, I'm not worried about the outcome of a spot check but getting pulled for a spot check every time I used it would be a real PITA.

Yep -I've 3 'pre 60's on the road.
Reasonably regular usage, not been stopped or even looked at.
Yet.

Getting any greif from the rozzers? Spot checks ect? Do common or garden Policemen (and Policewomen, of course) even bother with car stops unless they see something massively illegal going on? I'm talking about non-ANPR cars, where you're relying on an eagle eyed driver or passenger to spot you. My experience is in Central Scotland, maybe it's different in the badlands of the south. Are there any regular VOSA stops around you? I wonder if they'd stop you for a check if they had a checkpoint set up? When I used to commute, I used to see vans and trucks getting pulled for weight and load checks, then some checks on the immigration status of the people in them. I occasionally saw modded hot-hatches being pulled and checked over, usually because they had a loud exhaust. I know loads of bikers who are knocking around with totally illegal exhausts (which can be heard to be possibly illegal) or tiny number plates (which can be seen to be possibly illegal) and they never get pulled. I think you'd have to draw negative attention to yourself or be very, very unlucky to get a pull.

I wondered how this mot exemption would work on the basis that theoretically so moron could pull a car or van out of a field make it run and stop and drive it on the road. I guess vosa checks are the only way to catch such people out. But like you say you know your car is fine and if it looks tidy and cared for I doubt vosa or the local police would pay much attention to you.

How does rolling about with no MOT affect your insurance?
My guess is most insurers have a clause to say that the car has to be roadworthy otherwise the policy is invalid?
I guess a car that's MOT exempt would theoretically not trip an ANPR check if it's insured and taxed, but the likelihood of the third party being covered in the event of an accident would depend on the insurer?

Insurance isn't bothered about an mot, after all, an mot is only proof that the car is roadworthy until you pull out of the mot station after the test. As soon as you get back on the road it's the drivers responsibility to ensure the car is roadworthy. Mots are weird things. They only prove the car is roadworthy on the day it was presented for test but last a year! The only thing they're good for is getting your tax disk IMO.

the way I see it is as long as there's nothing obviously seriously wrong with the car to draw attention to it (so basically as long as there's no massive holes in the wheelarches/floorpan) then I seriously doubt police would be bothered to scrutineer it. and as said the MOT is only valid on that day in truth. Like our pug, flew through MOT then headlights stopped working 2 days later.

I had the opportunity to speak to a traffic partol Policeman this afternoon, my wife got herself in a tight spot and I had to go and pick her up. I asked if they were looking out for pre-'60 motors with a view to spot any obviously dodgy cars and check for defects. He said he was broadly aware that they were now exempt but any dodgy looking car or van was likely to get a pull and that they're not really looking for any particular age groups or anything. He singled out rat look motors (specific mention of VWs) and the ultra-lows as examples of what they will regularly stop and check. Their advice is that lowering a car makes it dangerous. Unfortunately, I wasn't in a position to dispute this or try and educate him.

When the car is properly low . You just can't drive fast and you look out for every pot hole and respect every speed hump with the full come to a stop scrape over it and drive off on your face . . When was the lasting time you saw a scraper rearend someone ..

sorry to bring this back up again, ive just helped an old friend push his 55 MM out of a lock up where it has sat since 89, am i right in thinking that after he has checked/fixed anything that looks like it needs fixing, it can then be driven on the road with no (m.o.t.) garage checks at all, when i first heard about the pre 60 thing i assumed there would be a more basic test put in place of the full M.O.T.

Correct though I there is a form to fill in as mentioned earlier in thread and it still has to be insured and a tax disc issued(at present) obviously. There was much hype originally as there always is as to just how many thousands of "wrecks" would be wheeled out of lock ups etc. I don't think it has happened quite like that. But to me, £45 for a piece of paper just to say that at least once in the last year someone has looked at it by the book is an insurance in itself.

Getting any greif from the rozzers? Spot checks ect? Occasionally get stopped because said rozzer is interested in old vehicles and wants a chat! Never actually been pulled over yet.
