Hi I have been longing for a thread like this so I can whinge about her Alfa 147. Its a 2005 JTD. It has served its purpose very well but there are those few things that really fiddle my wick 1 - It has two cup holders one right in front of the stereo so the cup pushes all the buttons when you put it in. And a second under neath the arm rest. so if you have anything in the cup holder you cant put the arm rest down....... and I like the arm rest down and she likes coffee 2 - It has a key switch kind of thing for the passenger airbag which is on the door card of the passenger door. It was obviously an after thought because when you shut the door the button sticks out and has dented the side of the dash. 3 - It has a solenoid thing to open the boot as previously mentioned...... which is annoying in its own right but they is no handle to lift the bootlid with. This means you have to lift it using the rear wiper...... ideal. Rant over. Alex

Watch the cambelt intervals on the JTD 16vs. Ignore them at your peril .

Not sure if it's been mentioned... Recently discovered that my mk4 astra has a small problem.
Some genius decided it was a good idea to put cup holders in the door of the glove box, which are only of any use when the door is down. Put a passenger in the seat and the cup holders become redundant get rid of the passenger and they're too far away for the driver to reach.

Why does the electronic handbrake exist? Whats actually the reason for it? I can just imagine the design offics: "Hey, we've got this really simple mechanical system that doesn't need any external influence to work, meaning it can be used as a safety measure if other stuff fails, and there's no real downside to it, as it's so simple it'll last the cars expected lifetime if maintained. Shall we replace it with a load of electronics, solinoids and other curse word that goes wrong easily and relies on other systems to work?" "Yeah, sounds like a great plan". Maybe it was discussed via e-mail and they didn't detect the sarcasm? In other news, I just discovered one with mk2 Sciroccos, apparently, if you shut the door quite hard (boarder-line slam, sort of a frustrated slam, not REALLY curse word off slam) with the window wound mostly down, but not all the way, the window explodes everywhere and you have to drive home with a breeze. Fun.

There are a few things that get on my wick with my mk2 orion !!!
1, The dash clocks suffer realy badley from peeling numbers and letters
2, You carnt wash the wind screen with the window down a few inches cus you get soaked
3, Early mk2 orions have the windscreen washer bottle on top of the inner wing ( so it keeps warm !!) whare as later facelift cars have them behind the front bumper whare they freeze up at the mearist sign of geting cold and cover the bumper mounting bolts as well !!!!
4, The boot lid has no insulation in side it so it condonsates and makes the boot wet for ever and a day
5, You carnt get the top front door hindge off without takeing the dash out ( Grrrrrr !!! )
And my old gray mk2 orion was the only FWD car i have owned that wore out rear tyres quicker than the front due to there being 5 pairs of ( very worn out !!) bushes to each side of the rear suspension !!

a few things that bug me with the imprezza
1, you get wet with the windows open if you attempt to wash the screen 2, everytime i go to shut the door i end up grabbing the glass! 3, the clutch pedal sticks three quarters the way down on almost every gear change (this is a common problem it seems) 4, the load space entrance (mines a wagon) is smallish and it is raised so you cant sit comfortably 5, The front fogs have a very short life span not sure if its how they are positioned but they soon get stone chips 6, the centre console arm rest just isnt in a usable position 7, theres no lockable interior storage

Sierra. The steering wheel's not central to the seat and pedals. That's a proper stupid problem. There's a coolant pipe that runs through the head on the cossie v6, so the head gasket chews through it, and you have to strip the inlet manifold off to change it. The rocker covers also have stupid bonded-on gaskets that leak for a pastime. The XR4x4 has an amp in the passenger footwell with such unique wiring connections that it's a complete ball ache to fit a decent stereo! The ABS system goes wrong as a hobby, and is often really pricy to fix. And the sun roof cables give up, and are a pain to change. And everything rusts. Everything.

The release button in the roof console is pretty neat though.

Mercedes E270 CDI Avantgarde W211
Rather expensive car when out, good spec overall.
I'd say this car is aimed at business men, people in a rush.
Even the cars ideal market is people who's on the road, it doesn't even have one cup holder in the front of the car, really, really annoying when you're in a rush.

Renault Twingo and the two-door versions of several cars of that era like Fiat Uno, Citroën AX, Peugeot 106 and probably some more don't have decent door handles (unlike the four-door which have normal ones) but hard-to-reach plastic thingy in a small slot between door and pillar. You can't open the left door with your left hand (and vice-versa) and if you're unlucky you hurt your fingers.
AX has the ashtray directly under the stereo so from time to time, smokers will hit the stereo with a glowing fag. (no more problem, I quitted long time ago)
MkIV Golf I tried to change the interior light bulb - no chance. I tried to figure out how to remove the lens, but couldn't find a latch or something to unhook. Manual didn't help. So I left it non-working, it wasn't my car...
Many older hatchbacks didn't come with a handle inside to shut the lid so you have to grab it on the outside - dirty fingers included. IIRC VW introduced that handle with the MkIII Golf.
Ever removed the lefthand lower control arm on a Golf MKIII Automatic? You can't get the long screw out, the oil pan from the slushbox is in the way. Yo have to lift the engine-gearbox ensemble up for about 5 centimetres... not to mention the brake valve at the rear beam of some Volkswagens, it's made from solid aluminium ant the fixing screws go right through. This rots together to one piece in no time, you can only remove it wih a hacksaw.
Already mentioned - oil filter change on a MX-5.
Draining coolant from a Mini is also a PITA if the radiator comes without a draining plug, especially if the hoses are decades old and hard. Why the heck they made radiators without draining plug???

It was the perfect height and size for me to hit myself in the dick every single time I closed the back door.

I think it is safe to say that on older cars there are design faults aplenty...!!!
That's not to say new cars don't of course!
My Triumph Toledo for example has one annoying (and painful!) design fault whereby the latch for the boot is positioned in such a way that ensures your noggin rarely gets out without being clobbered by the sadistically shaped thing!!!
OUCH...!

We have a new Transit custom at work with one of those cap less fuel tanks.
No filler cap, as such, just a springy flap. Every time you pull out the filling nozzle, diesel dribbles out of a small slot in the filling neck and onto the floor. Every time, even if you let it drain for ages.

*On a vw t4, if you have a twin passenger seat, the gearlever hits it when you go into 2nd gear. Eventually wears a hole in the seat cover.
You can adjust this out , but then 1st is a tiny gate and can pop out of gear...
*also on t4, the alternator wiring chafs on the sleeve it runs in , this can burn the alternator diodes out, and also trip the oil pressure warning buzzer and light as that is fed by revs of the alternator. (DOP system i belive) Can lead you to believe you have a dead engine or no oil.
*T4 again, The clutch pedal bracket bends as standard, over years it flex's until eventually it snaps and takes your clutch master cyl with it. (theres a bolt on prevenatative fix for this on ebay tho)

The tiny tiny drain holes on the hatch spoiler on my 924...permanently clog up so when you open the hatch all the collected water ends up in the boot
