As thread title I am looking a very strong axle to fit under the rear of a series 3 landrover as I want to change the engine, the 200DI is a rough old engine that will shake you teeth out.
I do not want fender flairs idealy and I am not bothered about the diff ratio as I would not be running 4x4 if I change the engine.
So strong and narrow ish is good, not bothered about welding on spring mounts I can do that no problem.
One last thing can I weld the front axle swivels to a length of steel bar for the front axle without diff in.

Salisbury from LWB should be more than enough for a 200 TDi. Ratio might be a problem though as you'd really need a Stage 1 axle if 3.44 required - which are as rare as poor quality wobbly children's play pony poop. Why not upgrade your existing axle as there are aftermarket stronger half shafts (the weak point) and diffs available. If you go to something like Dana axles (44's fitted to my Mahindra :-) ) then remember you'll need them front and back to match ratios. Jeep CJ5 & 7 should be able to donate suitable narrow Dana axles but can be quite expensive.

As said above I am not keeping the 200DI or using a 200TDI. I am also not keeping the 4x4 system so ratio is not that important, around 3.5 would be good though

I misread and assumed you were going to be fitting a 200TDi. ;D If you are going to fit such a Bentley engine then I'd say go for a US axle and have it narrowed to fit. Here is a comparison of the various types - www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/154_0708_weakest_to_strongest_axles/viewall.htmlI'd say at very least you will want Range Rover / Discovery swivels so disc brakes can be used. No problem having a tube axle - Land Rover made them for the ultra rare 2WD versions. Might be better to use a later Disco II front axle as it has ball joints. Paul H

A Bentley 6.75 turbo V8 engine and box Mwaa haaa haaaaa! That's properly mental! Love it. Twin turbos would be even better! A rangy axle would probably do he job - over finch nail big Yanky V8s to them without issue and they're plentiful. Itd need spring pads and a little narrowing though.

The Range Rover is permanent 4 wheel drive so power is being fed out to both axles. Plenty of people break standard Land Rover spec diffs with unmodified engines but plenty of abuse. I cannot imagine that a Bentley Turbo engined one would not be given generous amounts of abuse whether 2wd or 4wd. As others have said go american and get it narrowed. Plenty of ratios available for most of them. Adrian

Why not just mod a Bentley one to fit ? Could you not use a Jag axle?

Well just won a pre narrowed Oldsmobile O series axle with range rover discs and mg metro 4 pot calipers on.
That's one problem out of the way, its amazing how many problems you encounter putting a massive engine into an 88 ince leaf sprung Land rover.
