Yes I enjoy not driving American tv style, constantly rocking the wheel. For me it's a perfect conversion, as its just a bolt on, and uses cheap bits, plenty of p38 boxer about, I will gather a sprayer or 2 before they disappear .
Leccy sumo.... New batteries, charger, taxed, insured, but 20 mph flat out. I'm trying to get the controller looked at as its not giving out the power.

It has Been a year now since I did the hole chassis change and power steering, it was behaving perfectly until I took it to the imp club national weekend with claude the caravan l The following day on a trip out it was noticeably slower and had a misfire on start up, unusually I had filled it with diesel for the trip rather than the usual veg oil mix. A good weekend was had by all, and I came home in a convoy of fellow impers. All was not well, and having climbed a hill on the a38 we pulled off and joined a busy roundabout. Being busy and not wanting to hold up the 14 car convoy ( nightmare!) I saw a gap and went for it.........and then it took off in a big way.....YouTube "runaway diesel" It was really scary! Having turned off the ignition and having no effect, I slammed it into 4 th gear and stood on the brake, lost of horrible noises and an unbelievable amount of smoke, it stalled, and as the smoke cleared I realised I was surrounded by spectators......so embarrassing ! After it cooled, I started it up as I was blocking the roundabout and went to join the others who were waiting and looking shocked, everyone being far more concerned than me. It was running on 3 cylinders and once up to a certain speed would try 4, every so often I could feel it taking off again and would hit the brakes and pull over to cool! We stopped for lunch at Worcester and after it was very hard to start, oil sprayed everywhere, and when it did start it was super rough. We set off again and it got gradually slower and slower...it made it home hours later, but the last couple of miles were done in 2 nd gear! It was dead :-0

I was busy with work and had no time to fix it, I had a spare motor, but had ideas on fitting a mercedes 2.5 diesel I had, it was off the road for 3 months, seemed like years. I have had a 190 diesel for several years now, the 5 cylinder diesels are brilliant, not at all fast, but plod on clocking up huge milege with almost 300 k . These are well proven as one of the best motors to run on veg oil....and so decided that this combo for my daily landy would be perfect. There is little info on this being done, and so after a lot of measuring, I made cardboard templates and then used a mates plasma cutter to cut out 2 rings: 1 ring to fit the engine, I had a merc gearbox to draw around, and one ring to fit the Landy box. Holes were drilled to line up with the engine and box, and because I realised early on that most of the holes interfered with each other, I decided that I would join the rings externally , this just left me with the spacing of the rings, and lining them up accurately

Do you have pics of the Merc lump installed, and presumably it still sits 4" further forward on the gearbox? How does that relate to the radiator positioning? I really want to see more of this conversion

I had to relocate the alternator upward, so as to clear the diff. This was easy as I kept the original bracket and only used the top holes then fabricated a bracket for the top.

Engine mounts made... This is the oil filter, I blanked the outlets for the oil cooler for now.

I need to sort a proper air filter out and tidy up bits, and maybe think about an intercooler , not sure where or how yet. The induction noise is huge, coupled with turbo whistle, so that's priority. It does however go VERY well, as good as the old 2.8 Isuzu turbo, except much, much quieter, and with that fantastic 5 pot diesel noise......and on 100% veg oil. Here's a pic of the heat exchanger, it's a modded combi boiler exchanger and works a treat. The veg oil heats at the same rate as the water temp, and the return to the tank is warm and warms the tank.

The Merc lump looks like it fits well in the engine bay, does the gearbox spigot fit in the end of the flywheel?

Very interesting thread. I like the Merc diesel installation, which looks very tidy. With the galvanised chassis, and your other mods, it'll be a very usable motor!

Is he engine totally mechanical? Ie no flipping electronics?
Do you know it's designation?

Let me get this right... Isuzu engine change, steering P38 change, chassis change, merc engine change, veg oil modded combi boiler exchanger, brakes changed to Zeus, leccy Sumo and I guess leccy garage gates... You're no numpty are you?... very , very impressed Sir! Far more talent than I have! Hats off to you- I like!

Wow .....thank you! That's praise indeed! I like to play with toys, and hope to get a result but it doesn't always go like that, does it? To answer the questions, the input shaft is way smaller than the crank hole . I removed the roller bearing and had a spigot bearing made or phosphor bronze. No doubt there would be a bearing the correct size, but no idea how to source it. These engines are found in a daewoo or ssang yong musso.....made under licence from mercedes. It is totally non electronic, even the shut off valve is vacuum operated, the only electronic thing on it is the alternator ! It is so simple, that's why I like it so much. I have been to the 4x4 sale in Newbury today, so about 120 miles, great drive and it is about the same on fuel as the old Isuzu, which is a result :-)

Thanks for that, I've got the engine and transmission from a mid 90's Mercedes with dual mass flywheel, and the crank spigot is a bit smaller. I just wondered how much of a difference there would be between the early and later engines making them more/less suitable for swapping

Dual mass......ooh scary!! The flywheel I am using is from a 2.5 from a 190, it is quite thin and light, does make the 2.9 rev quickly lol
