Plenty of retro rally action at LR4H

Made a last minute call to pop along to Rushmoor for the first London Rally for Heros. I was undecided leading up to the event as they had set the price at £20/car, which for a few passes of a stage is pretty steep, especially when the facilities amount to two burger vans and a row of portaloos. But my brother wanted a hoon out in his Caterham so at 9am with the sun shining down we set out.



After a spirited drive over, culminating in the gate marshal asking us to "give it some stick" on the private road into the parking area ;D We headed down to the one viewing area they had. Luckily we bumped into a friend of my brothers who had got directions from the marshal crew to the service park and the other viewing area on the stage. We wandered round the service area as it filled up with cars ready for tyre changes and work.





This was parked up in a corner of the park.


Nice to see a Sunny out on the stages.




Crazy Belgians were puff on cigars while servicing this Escort


A pair of Tuthill 911s were running as well.

Off the side of the service park was a corner of the stage, for those that have been to Wheels Day before, it ran up the tarmac hill behind where the big trucks park on the grass hill, then turns 90° through a gate then 90° on to the access road and round the back of the public carpark. Off camber, bumps and a tight gap with dusty tarmac meant plenty of tail out action.















This Vitesse was impressive, sliding and rumbling around. In the service park is was pi$$ing oil down its mudflaps, but kept running until midafternoon.


This 911 was mental, jumping through the gate and drifting round the corner


Stood by the fence we could also see the cars lining up to go out, some proper RR fodder was getting prepped.

Despite being behind a steel upright, a concrete pillar and some fencing, we all stepped backed when the Wolf Landies came along. Lean, lean and then more lean!

Taking a break for lunch, the cars would be back through in an hour, we wandered back to the 7 to retrieve some food then walked down to the main spectator area. Again, for the Wheels Day regulars, the long road where the traders are and the sandy cliff to the side was the site of this next section. The Lancia OC was there showing off in a couple of Deltas, sadly they stopped after one of them bent the back end!

Soon the course car was flying past and the stage was open. we could see the cars arrive in the distance and disappear behind the trees before bursting into view infront of us. Drifting across a gravel curve and back through the trees. It was a dusty place to watch!


Car 0 wasn't listed in the entries and I didn't catch the commentators remarks, but it was a nippy little curse word.




Not really retro, ex-Henning Solberg Corolla WRC is now 15yrs old and a bit different to the usual Subaru and Ford works cars that grace the club rally world.




Later WRC and Cosworth Escorts were out too.

The big Rover was pounding the dust, it pulled up shortly after this though.




A modern car, but a special one. This Fiesta was driven by the Race2Recovery guys, the wounded army guys that did the Dakar. They won their class.

We moved up to the chicane at the end of the straight, some three wheeling from unlikely cars.






Our last viewing point was the final corner of the stage. The cars ran through the entrance gate onto the Wheels Day field, anyone who has driven in knows its narrow and off camber!












And that was it. A scorching day compare to my last visit on Good Friday. Loads of great cars and action ;D

The Armed Forces Rally team runs them, there were 5 or 6 out leaning round the bends. ;D
