Earlier today a young lad knocked on the door asking about my XR2i stating he was looking for classic cars. He was too young to even know what it was. It didn't ring true. May be out looking for easy tow aways to weigh in.

i would think it unlikely that they were thinking about stealing it if they knocked on your door and asked you face to face.
more likely they wanted to buy it to restore, weigh in or race.
at worse they they might have wanted it for free or cheap.

second mr al ramones views there, I'm not that old, but i know my old cars, and ive knocked on for stuff alot older than an xr2 knowing exactly what it was, chancing my arm if somethings parked up that it maybe for sale!
