Got my tyres fitted thismorning, very pleased with the result Just a slight difference in size Right tyre is a 235/70/16, left is a 285/75/16 or 29" and 33" rolling radius. Will need to trim the arches slightly if i'm going to take it offroad, but then if i was taking it offroad (for anything serious) i'd need to uprate the diffs and possibly the transfer box as apparently they wont last long with these tyres (pins can shear in the diffs and the splines can strip in the transfer box) though they will be fine on the road. TBH this thing is pretty much a Chelsea Tractor in my ownership, bodywork is just too nice to bash it about, it owes me too much money, i namby pamby my cars too much and i hate mud Would have liked to have used the Disco 1 alloys but these would have needed 30mm spacers all round (which i did'nt fancy using anyway, too much strain on the bearings, bump steer etc), which are expensive at £175 for the set, the steel modulars fitted straight on with excellent clearance. The wheels could do with a coat of paint but i'll be changing them next year for wider rims (possibly 10x16's) and putting extended arches on the body so will live with them the way they are.

Cheers guys , was worried that the big tyres would raise the gearing (they will have) and make it sluggish pulling away etc but it feels no different, it's quite nippy actually (motor has been tweeked with a bigger intercooler, EGR bypass etc) I love the fact i can do most jobs on it without having to jack it up , will be doing all the brake pipes and flexy hoses next month, that'll be a doddle, also Underseal/Hammerite the underside, oil changes are a breeze, will be keeping this truck for a while .

yeah bit more road speed for your revs, lower final drive with 5 nuts ! i had 750s on my ninety which made a big difference and brilliant just crawl straight under with your tools. big fan of this route rather than lifted springs and cranked arms, bigger tyres are the best way to gain ground clearance (as diff casing is the lowest part of the vehicle anyway)

Man that is one sweet looking truck. Well jealous.
Kind of the route i want to go when i'm able to get another Disco. Not so much for all out mud/quarry bashing (paid the price for that many times over)but more for 'no matter what weather' type situations.
Again well jealous.

Bit more progress to this, did a bit of welding to the N/S/F inner wing, usuall stuff, cut the rot out, cardboard templates, cut steel, glued in with sparky gun, undersealed, truck is 100% solid now. Just wish the last owner had done the same standard of repair on the other side, he's just slapped the plates on top of the rust, after making a superb job of the sills and the other repairs, to be fair though he did mention he intended fitting whole new inner wings so was just a quick patch up, I don't think new inner wings are necessary though so will probably just chop that repair out and do it properly next year. Also replaced the front wheel bearings last week, straightforward job, did notice during this that there is play in the N/S top swivel pin so that'll need done for the MOT next month, thing about a Discovery is that every time you repair it you Discover something else needing done Also rattle canned the wheels to smarten them up for now as it'll be a while before I buy new ones, trying to decide between 10x16 modulars (which would really let the 285's fill out) with arch extensions or 8x16 Mach 5's, (either style would be done orange to match the decals), plenty of time to decide though.

I vote Mach 5's, even though you'll have to sell your first born to fund them!

Ah, did'nt know they only came in 7", last time i looked they were around £150 each, i think the Mach5's are around £200. Probably will be Modulars TBH, £54 for a 10x16, cant go wrong with that, 50mm FlatDog arches, the 10" wide rim will let the big tyres fatten right out too.

If you're after Mach 5 replicas, 4x4 Tyres in Bidford do their own range of steel ones, and they're not expensive at all. If you're interested, give Freddie a call on 0845 1547 562 and tell him you're a mate of Si's, he'll look after you .

Had a look at them earlier, trouble is they are only available in 7x16, too narrow for the 285 tyres (and the same size as the modulars i have on it now, i'll need at least 8's idealy 10's (though 10's will need arch extensions). Cheers for the help though buddy , and the compliment too, appreciate that

No worries, I've had my fair share of modified Discos.
Most people who run anything over 33" will run 15"s purely because of the fitment issues/sidewall bite.
I've had a few pairs of, and am currently running, 33x12.50/15s.

I'm using 33"/285/75/16 on 8x16 Modulars, 30mm spacers, wide arches and a 2" lift...still flex's Mines a bit of a showpony though, got all the gear but only see's a few gentle lanes...goes well on the road though, hybrid T28, big FMIC, decat, single box exhaust, boost/pump mods...

Sounds great, my attitude towards mine is pretty much the same, it's a showboat/chelsea tractor, mine has only seen farm tracks, when i eventually sell it, if the new owner wants to offroad it that's fine, at least it's capable. Hybrid Turbo sounds good , i already have a big intercooler (Allysport i think ?), straight through de-cat pipe etc, motor is healthy too so a bigger Turbo would be a good upgrade.
