I think the time has come to part company with my Audi. I'm looking for £200 but if you've got something (preferably under 1549cc) with a few months test that you fancy swapping with a bit of cash coming your way I might be up for it.
It’s a ’93 100E Avant with 184K on the clock. I bought it a year ago as transport for a family holiday and it just sort of stuck around. However, the MoT has run out and it failed its test on emissions, a tyre, an exhaust blow, a non-working repeater and a duff handbrake. Everything is sorted bar the emissions which I hoped a new cat to fix the exhaust blow would sort but sadly not.
At the first test, the emissions were:
Fast idle test
CO = 0.36 (needs to be no more than 0.3) Fail
HC = 73 (needs to be no more than 200) Pass
Lambda = 1.083 (needs to be between .970 and 1.030) Fail
Natural idle test
CO = 0.5 (needs to be no more than 0.5) Pass
What I didn’t realize at the time was that the idle stability control valve was connected to the hoses but the multi-pin was off. I replaced the cat this week and reconnected the ISCV. After that it was idling rock steady and driving really well. However, at the retest the emissions were:
Fast idle test
CO = 0.6 Fail
HC = 109 Pass
Lambda = 1.028 (Pass
Natural idle test
CO = 03.62 Fail
There are no other symptoms of a problem, it’s running and idling fine. It is getting up to temperature properly and the cooling fan is cutting in as you would expect. I was going to take it to my local fuel injection specialist who will do diagnostics for £45, however, the price of that, plus another test, plus parts, means it’ll end up costing more than the thing is worth and I was planning to shift it anyway.
Good points:
Starts, stops etc. The gears gear, the clutch clutches and the brakes brake. It occasionally blows a puff of smoke on start-up if it’s been sat but otherwise doesn’t smoke at all. The interior is in good condition with a fully intact driver’s seat bolster. Stickers on windows included in asking price, as is the bit of old Alfa boot carpet in the load area. EW x 4 and central locking all work fine on the key but the central locking button on the driver’s door doesn’t do anything. It’s taxed until the end of October. It has a towbar but the wiring is disconnected. I even have the wheel trims somewhere. There was some rust in the OSF wing bottom which I filled but it's otherwise very solid.
Bad points
Apart from the emissions issue it is fairly sound mechanically, though with 115BHP and weighing 1500kg, it’s no sportscar. The bodyhas a few battle scars and requires a bit of polish now and then to stop it turning German racing pink. As pictured it hasn’t been washed in about 2 months.
The only other issue is that the speedo is a bit temperamental in hot weather. This can apparently be fixed quite easily without spending any money.
