You know the stuff I mean, it looks like a feather boa! Anyway, twice now I've found it dragging out of the tailpipe, when it was absolutely fine when I'd started the journey (this morning being a trip of about fifteen minutes). Firstly, what would cause this to happen? Secondly, should I worry? Is it indicative of further issues? Thirdly, if it's not indicative, will cutting it off do any harm?

It's only the padding material they stick in the silencer. It won't do any harm if it's removed. Just don't touch it with bare hands as it's glass fibre strands which can cause skin irritation.

it is the sound deadening material from the box. worst case scenario is that it could block the exhaust and you will find the car lacking in power, due to reduced gas flow. Time for a new back box

I wouldn't worry too much, one of my old Lancias blew all the stuffing out of the back box on the M4 years ago. Left a smouldering heap on the hard shoulder but it still went well!

so long as it comes out, then yeah, it won't cause any probs. however I have had an exhaust block up when the fibreglass bunged the tailpipe up, made the engine run hot and wouldn't get above 50mph! pull the stuff out. if you can live with the noise, leave it till the mot is due or the popo pull you and make you get it fixed!

Nowt to worry about there. It'll get a little louder (maybe even sound better) but that's about it

So, the back box has finally given up the ghost, but my local mechanic can't locate one at a reasonable price. Any ideas where I might find such a thing, at a reasonable price in east London/west Essex? It's for a 1992 Granada 2.0i petrol auto. I thought Burton would have one, but apparently not.

OK, I've ordered the back box, from the link kindly posted by trigger but there's apparently two different types, depending on whether I have a catalytic converter. The fuel filler flap says 'unleaded only', and the filler neck is green, which I would think are good indications that there is one, but I had a crawl underneath and can only see a back and centre box. I've seen a number of diagrams/photos online, and neither of the boxes I can see look like these. Is the only way to know for sure to get it up on a ramp? This should maybe go in the 'Daft Question Amnesty'...

Any decent spares shop will be able to get one, i got a cortina rear box last week so a Mk3 granada should be no issue what so ever and they will be able to tell from your reg what ex it needs. All fords were unlleaded from 89 on but cat fitment wasn't law till 92 so unleaded is no proof of a cat, what's yours? a twin cam or 2.9? the twin cam cat is obv as it has a heat sheild round it and insulation above it (between the floor and box), also the non cat engine designation is N9A cat engines are N9C/N9E/NSE/N9D, should tell you on the data plate/vin plate what's in there

Cheers bortaf, I must admit I didn't expect it to be such a problem to get hold of! It's the 2.0 twin-cam, so I'll check the VIN in the morning.

OK, the VIN is still not conclusive: It shows the engine is an N9. It doesn't show an A anywhere, but does show a couple of Ds in different places? It says the exhaust/emissions is a U? On the V5, it says the engine number is NR and five digits.

Not a clue But as I was walking past the garage next door, his lift was empty, so I asked him if I could stick it on there quickly to check. And lo and behold, there it was!
