Well I've gone and purchased a big old Yankee barge. I saw this car about 5 years ago at fins and chrome show and had my eyes on it then, it then popped up on eBay a couple of months ago so I jumped on it. After a lot of messing about and heartache its now mine. I was at the RR gathering when the seller said it was ready to collect with new MOT and tax on it. So my Ma & Pa went to pick it up for me. It was about 50/60 miles away, no prob's in the dark getting lost in a huge LHD car in the middle of nowhere.
Its a 6.4 390ci big block Merc-o-matic on the column. I tend not to look at the fuel gauge, but on a run it seems to be getting about 17 smiles to the gallon. that's if the fuel gauge works right. Which is way better that I thought it was going to be. I dare not work the MPG out when I go for a blast through the tunnels tho. It originally came from Frank Andrews Lincoln/Mercury car dealer in Roseville California its still going as a different dealership selling SUV's and whatnot. Then it moved to the other side of the US, To Georges Mercury Farm in North Carolina. Which I can only guess was/is a scrap yard of some description, where the previous owner got it from. Apparently it had a snake living inside the car at one point and squirrels under the bonnet.
I have a boat load of hard to find spares, Inc Nos seat material, carpet set, roof lining, badges, loads of hub caps, gaskets and such that will be fitted when I've sorted some issues out. The hub caps look good hanging up in the garage for now anyway, and my bedroom is now littered with Mercury parts (fine with me).
I still can't figure out if I'm going to leave it as is or paint it. Ether way some bits of rust want sorting before they get any worse. The whole of the underneath needs painting and under sealing not looking forward to that job.
Problems so far are sticking brake pedal. Fixed by taking apart the servo and master cylinder and finding a cruddy plunger (< My Dads words) that was sticking on after the brakes where applied. Another problem is the leaky power steering hose that dumped all its fluid, thankfully I was on my drive when it split. The engine and electrics cut out on the way to Mk14dr's place, my heart sank but it turned out to be a dodgy quick release battery terminal. It also needs a small amount of welding on the passengers side floor but it has a chassis so no worries for now.
Enough rambling have some pictures.
What greeted me when I got home.
After some light tinkering, greasing the suspension and flushing out the rad and replacing rusty water with nice new blue coolant. Then those bumper stickers where taken off. Then the white walls & chrome cleaned.
I then went around to stealthstylz to try on some KFW Special wheels.
Painted the number plates and removed the faded black paint from the back panel. Still need to center the fuel cap
Needs tidying up a tad
