Here are some photos from Friday at the Goodwood Revival -the day was mostly just qualifying for races on Saturday and Sunday, but still provided plenty of outstanding on track action!
The first series on track was the Freddie March Memorial Trophy, featuring endurance cars from '52-'55 including Jaguar C Types, Maseratis and Aston Martins with some big name drivers extracting every last tenth from these priceless machines in damp conditions:

Next came some pre-war Grand Prix cars in the Goodwood Trophy. They were absolutely deafening stood on the pit straight, and I still can't hear properly:

A quick tour of the pits gave us a hint of what was to come - no less than 30 GT40s were scattered about the pits including this, the ultimate evolution, the Mirage:

As we made our way back from the pits we were treated to a fly-by from a Spitfire, a P51 Mustang:

Back on track the series of the weekend was getting underway - the St. Mary's Trophy. The cars were impressive (Ford Galaxie 500s, Lotus Cortinas and a gaggle of Mini Coopers to name a few) but they had nothing on the driver line-up. It reads like a who's who of F1, Touring Car and Sportscar racing: Christian Horner, Steve Soper, Mark Blundell, Darren Turner, Oliver Gavin, David Richards, Frank Stippler, Rob Huff, Romain Dumas, Jochen Mass, Derek Bell, John Cleland and Anthony Reid. Even some celebrities crept in including Rowan Atkinson, Sir Chris Hoy and James Martin. And although a Mini Cooper S ended up on poll, no-one could touch Mr. Le Mans himself Tom Kristensen as he made his red No. 83 Galaxie dance around in worsening conditions:

Next up came the Whitsun Trophy, exclusively for the GT40. 27 were on track at the same time. It looked and sounded amazing:

As conditions continued to worsen it was getting a bit lairy on the exit of Madgwick corner:

After a few single seater races and a lunch break with another fly-by action resumed with a race for Classic GT cars, and featured a pair of 300SLs, a Ferrari 250 GT, a Corvette and plenty more besides:

A quick flash of a GRRC badge got us into the member only enclosure by the edge of the circuit where the metal parked up was on another level entirely from the "normal" Revival classic car park:

We missed the RAC TT while touring the paddock, which I was gutted about! There was still plenty of good stuff to see however, including the Sussex Trophy for '55-'60 World Sports Cars (Think D Types, Birdcages, DBR1s etc):

It was nearly over - just one more track session to go but it was the big one - the only race of the day, a 90 minute race for the Freddie March Memorial Trophy cars we saw first thing in the morning. It started at 6.15pm and ran into the sunset.
Well.
It would have.
If the sun had been shining, but as the race started the heavens opened and it hammered down for the entire race.
I was soaked, but watching Al Buncombe (No. 12) and Sam Hannock (No. 9) wrestle their C Types around in the dark on a track that more closely resembled a river while executing some huge drifts is a memory that will stay with me for a long time:

After a fairly serious shunt in appalling conditions for the Cooper-Bristol that had led early on the race was red flagged and that was it for the day. A well deserved victory for Al Buncombe in the No. 12 C Type.
The day was quite simply amazing - if you haven't been, go next year!

But even better than that a Youtube Live Stream is available over the weekend for those that didn't get tickets. (The racing today was top notch!)
