I went over to TFS Performance in Aldershot on saturday, to see my old mate Stuart, who I hadn't seen for a while. We got chewing the fat about this and that, looked at a couple of his customers cars, a Blue WRX that had just had a full 400bhp engine rebuild,a Purple STi with a money no object 600 BHP ongoing engine project that has taken 10 months and various bits and bobs. I was looking at some of the battered Scoobys out the front and asked if they were spares cars. well, said Stu, not the red one, that's quite intresting and opened the bonnet. To say I was shocked was an understatement! This started life as an RA, the ultra light Impreza, that had been bought for £500 as a rolling shell. Stuarts boy had wanted to start drifting and an MX5 was bought and was sitting in the back of the workshop when Stu got thinking about the RA. Next thing it was converted to RWD and the gear sold for £250, a 2.0 Pintp and gearbox was bought for £250 and viola, a learner drift car that can get it's out, without being uncontrolable for £500. If he likes it and gets the bug, Stu's going to drop in a BMW V8 or SRDET lump. When I showed a few mates the pics, the general reply was WTF! but when I look back to how easy it was to get the back out on a MK1/11 escort or capri, it starts to make sense Daz.

I like that, any idea how much chopping was needed to get it in?

I like that, any idea how much chopping was needed to get it in? Not a lot to be honest. The steering column needed rose jointing to clear the Pinto's exhaust manifold, new mounts fabricated and that was about it. Obviously the pinto is smaller than the Boxer turbo, so fitment was never going to be an issue. Life is a lot easier without 10 miles of electronics, Ecu's etc.

Interesting and oddball use for a pretty cool shell. I'd be interested in seeing how well it drifts.

It's had a couple of shakedowns and is suprisingly quick. Never going to set the world on fire, but that wasn't what it was built for. It would have been easy enough to create a monster drifter, but you know how what teenagers are like, one minute they want to do this, then the next minute its Naaah I want to take up something else!

Just the other day I joked about how no-one has fitted an old Kent engine into a Focus and here's a Subaru Impreza with a Pinto lump on a carb!

I'm impressed how far back it sits, showing just how bulky the Subaru flat-4 & transaxle manage to be, & end up weighing as well, even with plenty of alloy bits.

We used to love Fords when we were kids. Back when he was 20, Stu had a factory X pack RS2000.Think he sold it for about £400.We talked about that the other day, when he had finished beating himself up! Now its Subarus of all shapes and sizes. If you're around the Aldershot area, pop in and see him for a chat opposite the football ground. This is his 9 second Race impreza.

This almost reminds me of a sierra hatchback that came up for sale a few years ago with (if memory serves me right) had a 1300 chevette engine fitted. By the sounds of it, the pinto lump had been sacraficed for the shuvit... and instead of scrapping the sierra, they just plonked the 1300 back in its place!

When he lifted the bonnet, the first thing that sprung to mind, was the White 924, with the Beetle lump in the back
