So no doubt some of you will have heard of The Baja 1000. Over the years it's led to some pretty insane vehicles being fabricated from scratch and then comprehensively thrashed. Terrific. So why am I posting about it? Well today I found out that back in the day there were a few guys crazy awesome enough to give it a go in a muscle car. One of these err Awesomistas was Jim Garner who did it in an Olds 442 (one of my favourite muscle cars ever). Here is the full article. And here are the obligatory pics: The pics I've posted are all well and good, but I encourage you to read the full article, it's pretty cool and also has even more pics. In fact here's one to pique your interest:

I've only just spotted that some utter bellhousing has tried to (badly) photoshop out the HotRod logo from some of the pics I posted. I just want to say that it wasn't me and that I want HotRod to get all credit they deserve for these lovely pics. I just did a reverse image search and tried to get them in the best size. TOTALLYNOTMYFAULTS! Anyway, as you were.

That Edsel is beyond awesome, just for sheer innapropriateness (and if that isn't a word then it ought to be). Although the 442 is probably my fave muscle car evar, I guess you'd have to go for the AMC Hornet because it already has the advantage of being able to do 360-degree flip jumps over broken river crossings, a definite advantage over the wadis and canyons on the Baja

That is an awesome picture Will be watching the Baja Social Club film when its released, that looks good. Anyone interested in the Baja race should check out 'Dust To Glory' not much retro metal in it (well apart from the hero's in the Bettle class) but really well made and well filmed

That dust to glory video was 100 minutes of my life well spent! Gotta respect the guys who rides bikes, and the guys in the beetles. And those trophy trucks just look undriveable!

Some excellent/inappropriate machinery there. Did anyone else sing 70s rock riffs to themselves whilst browsing the images? I like the fact that due to extra sweaty right feet, the 442 has an Odor-eaters dispenser conveniently placed for optimum cabin freshness
