The Mondeo is 20 years old!!!!! Where has the last 20 years gone?

I mean it is a favourite with the banger boys, just as the Cortina was so could it get the status?

Personally I wouldn't call it retro. However, lots of potential, and they are getting very rare. Also quite an iconic car in some ways. Have some more cool ones

I don't even class the sierra sapphire as retro.

The Mondeo is one of crappiest cars out there. Only the touring cars were worth looking at.

The facelift comes with a factory 'Bad Boy' Bonnet. I think they can be cool, but many have been Barried and that kind of sticks in my mind every time I see one. ( That and the obligatory gaffer taped bumpers

I see them as more 'engine donor' than 'retro'. But there time must come I guess. I never really thought the Sierra would ever be retro but they are the last RWD main stream car Ford made so can be pidgeon holed to a certain 'era'. The Mondeo though was (as the Sierra was also described in its day) just a bland FWD shopping trolley like all the rest out there with lots of blow moulded plastic. And ther-in lies the problem. It's advanced far enough to not show it's age. Look at the difference in styling and technology between the Cortina and Sierra or the Mk2 & Mk3 Escort and there's a deffinate leap. Since the Mondeo came along, apart from sat-nav, not a lot of any substance has really changed.
It'll no doubt find favour with the younger retro-riders to whom the reality of the cars age is much more apparent; which is a good thing. We can't all lust over Triumphs, Austins, Cortinas etc... or we'd all be buying and building the same cars.
My Cortina was very much a retro classic when I bought it in about 2004, when it was 20 years old!

I'd definately say at least the mk1 mondy is retro, maybe even the facelift one

A mk1 mondy is to my mind a retro and no doubt the si's and the 4x4's will find their way into the modern classic bracket. As times do change, when the jaaaaag XJS was new people hated it now it's a regarded a classic of 80's excess, the cortina the mk1 caviler all the sales rep boxes of their time are now seen as retro, I think we should let the Mondeo have it's share if the lime light. After all in ten years we will all be sitting here saying "where have all the mondeos gone?"

Not quite, the mk1 is a rare car these days though! Had afew mk1's as workhorses afew years ago, a 1.8 TD estate with obligatory bodged up bumpers and a 2.0 zetec GLX. Handled well, reliable and comfortable... Great cars imo

I use a mk1 one as family car still (well my parents do, bought it used in 1999, it's still our main car and seeing as I got my license 5 years ago it's the car I drive). No gaffer tape on the bumpers either! It's done over 400 thousand kilometers, and is still going well. It is getting on a bit though, not going to lie. Starting to rust on the bottom of the sills. Breaks my heart, it's like seeing a loyal dog starting to get sick with old age

Can't see it ever becoming retro though. It's too sensible and unassuming to be very "cool" I think. No offense to any people who posted pics in this thread, but all those "tuned/styled" ones in the pictures here are hilariously terrible IMO. So barryish, and could only ever serve to make the Mondeo look more "I desperately want to be cool" than "I am cool".

Retro is always the cars you grew up with as a kid. Seeing as 17/18 year olds passing their tests today grew up with Mondeos and Vectras on Mum and Dads driveways, saying they aren't retro yet is more a statement of yourself not being able to handle growing old, not the status of the car. And since when was the 'goodness' of a car related to the retroness? Just saying....

Martin Hadland's Mondeo was an absolute legend.
