Today, the 9th of October marks 50 years since the launch of the Rover P6, in 1963. A very revolutionary car for it's time, with four wheel disc brakes, De-Dion rear suspension, radial tyres as standard from new and safety provisions good enough to win a safety award from the AA. Still a massively under appreciated car.

I had one of these for a bit. Unfortunately it turned out that while I wasn't looking at it rust ate all the chassis away. It was a V8 with a 5 speed manual box too and immaculate everywhere else. To say I was gutted was an understatement. It was scary watching the back wheels move about an inch backwards during the MOT brake test though! Oh well, maybe one day another will appear in my life

Well was going to say i've never seen one in real life with wire wheels, I know they also made a estate version but a convertible? I think there a real nice looking car and are lovely to drive the only thing that goes against them imo other than rust is the fuel economy. Otherwise i think i'd have another myself.

I ruddy love the P6 and I've had 2 of them in both 4-cylinder and V8 flavour... I really want another V8 pretty damn quickly... I cannot believe these have been with us for 50 years, that is an insane thought! I think the P6 is a truly under appreciated classic as it offers so much for the money (comparitivley!)... They have their faults as do all classics but my word they're nice when they're on song as it were!!! I think that they still stand for a period when British car design and manufacture was really at its peak and represented something truly great and exciting... On the flip side it seems even more tragic that in such a short time the whole industry in Britain seemed to collapse almost overnight!!! Oh well, let's all revel in the glory of the Rover P6...

I think there a real nice looking car and are lovely to drive the only thing that goes against them imo other than rust is the fuel economy. Otherwise i think i'd have another myself. I have had 2 of these, one for around 4/5 years, white V8 Auto, NZ production, black windows, nice re-trim, probably the most comfortable car I have ever driven, and that includes air suspended Benzes and a T1 Bentley The other was a UK production V8 (last S1) rust bucket, bought it without a roadie and when I got the nice looking outer panels off it was so rusty it never saw the road again, lesson learned Wires ware available factory very early on (Mk1 only) IIRC Estates were Crawford and the Convertible was Gerber or something like that. THe cab is very, very classy, that picture with the boot mounted wheel doesn't do it justice.

Contrary to popular opinion, I do have mechanical sympathy, I always feel sorry for the cars I drive.

Great cars, can't believe they're 50 years old! That makes me feel old as although they're mentally in the 'old classic' bracket in my head, 50 years seems more like a 'vintage' that you wouldn't dare drive as a daily.
Lovely V8 burble on my old one.

I think I am going to have to get another V8 P6...!!! I still desperately regret selling my last one... For sheer luxo-barge value these old brutes are high, HIGH up on the list...!

I think the only thing that spoils the car is boot mounted spare just spoils the look of the car.

Boot mount spare was an optional extra, I haven't fitted one, although I have the kit, is because you have a big lump of liquorice in your rear view mirror all the time.

That is indeed the 'Birdseye' building and it is still standing although it has been empty for some time...! It is a great setting for some 1970's style car shots...!!!

Love the Rover P6. They're so smooth to drive, you simply burble along in well-screwed-together luxury. Or, when you plant it you get rewarded with a surprising turn of speed and handling abilities. Amazing value for money too. A very safe car by all accounts, that one that Vinny Jones smashed into the back of that Cortina wagon in Lock Stock is still on the road, so they can take a good bashing. A Graber hard top for me! Beautiful proportions thanks to the use of a BMW CSi rear screen to compliment the visually longer rear quarters and the body's sweeping suage line accentuated by stainless steel trim. Lovely.
The convertible is rather nice too though.

Maybe a seperate thread needs starting for the gorgeous, Italian styled beauty that is the Triumph 2000...?! I love the look of that 'Graber' P6 coupe, it looks wonderful... I think it was harder for the P6 to be modified due to the base-unit construction method used but I may be wrong...?! The P6 could (and ruddy well should!) have spawned this sporty little number that Rover was planning to launch under the Alvis name... Being part of the BLMC/BL empire put that concept to bed!!!!!!!!

I love my S1 3500. Smooth, comfortably and reasonably quick. Mine is a 5 speed manual and gives almost reasonable fuel economy when driven gently. The only problem I have with mine is that while it has a few tweaks under the skin, I can't bring myself to lower it in case it ruins the ride.

I think it was harder for the P6 to be modified due to the base-unit construction method used but I may be wrong...?! I think you just have to use the P6's different construction to your advantage with these. Like with the base unit construction, I would rather a separate chassis but on the plus side it allows for all the outer panels to be bolt-on and non-structural, which opens doors to all sorts of modding possibilities! I'm also wondering how feasible a bolt-on front chassis to replace the inner wings would be, a la E-type Jag; since all the front suspension force is on the bulkhead anyway so a) It's gonna be strong and b) the inner wings aren't taking a lot of the suspension force so you could have a pretty light tubular construction instead of a metric F-load of P6 inner wings Also not that hard to two-door in theory, though there seems to be surprisingly few converted ones out there. ^ That's hot!
