I've had some issues with the wipers on my MGB lately (but I think this wiper system was used on a few BL cars), culminating in them failing completely. Since then I managed to remount the wiper motor properly and get them working again but I can only get one of the wipers to work at any one time, if I fit both wipers, I can hear a clicking and the wipers jerk across the screen erratically. But with only one wiper fitted it works smoothly. I've now had the wiper system off the car and this is the condition of the wiper cable/rack and the wheelboxes, to me they don't look too worn but are there any more experienced heads on here who could suggest if I'm looking at worn bits before I put it all back together with my replacement (NOS) wiper motor and rack? Condition of wheelbox 1 Condition of wheelbox 2 Condition of old wiper cable/rack, has a bit of a kink in it? Condition of new wiper cable/rack for comparison Also should I clean off the old grease and regrease the wheelboxes before putting back together? Cheers

The wheelboxes themselves look ok. Clean them up thoroughly and regrease them and make sure they are free to spin. Make sure all the operating linkage inside the wiper motor (the bit that's pushing and pulling the rack has plenty of fresh grease and isn't seizing. Sounds like the load of 2 wipers is causing too much resistance on something that's already struggling.

Hi, Sounds like the problem is in the gearbox on the motor. If you remove the lid off the gearbox inside you will see the shaft from the motor has a worm on it which acts on the rack round the outside of the fibre wheel which is usually where the wear is. Lift the cable off the pin on the wheel, remove the circlip from the shaft on the other side of the gearbox and lift the wheel out of the casing. clean and inspect you will probably find it is worn. Stamped on the metal plate riveted to the fibre wheel is a number this is the angle of the arc that the wiper arm descibes on the screen, you need to make sure the replacement you get is the same. Or if you think you can re-rivet it you can change the plate over.
Hope this helps!

Cheers for the responses guys I've had a look inside both the gearbox housings on the motors and they don't look too bad, the replacement motor I bought looks a bit better though so I think I'll give it a clean up and a regrease and see how it goes. I'm guessing I should be quite liberal with the grease? Also, this screw that goes through the top of the housing and appears to screw down on to the top of the worm gear.. does that need to be tightened down on to the worm gear or should it be slightly above it, as theres a gap between the two on my replacement motor but the original one has the screw and the top of the worm gear touching
