I guess we've all seen forum member Coxy's thread about his Audi 80. Its quite amazing and shows what can be done with old paintwork if you know what you are doing. Well I have no idea what i'm doing, however the week before last I spent £46 on one of these: a polishing machine. Not a posh one or owt but better than an arm I think. I'm hoping to bring some improvement to my fleet of dull old motors. What is our experience of these things? And what are our favourite products and techniques for polishing with a machine? I hesitate to ask coxy cos its his job and he's hardly going to dish out his hard-won skills on a forum just like that, but seeing as I have never done this before any info is a bonus.

That comment last week about someone doing insane polishing things to a brand new Astra or whatever has clearly influenced you!

I haven't read it through yet (I will do when I get round to it), but here might be a good place to start.

I used to work as a valeter, and they would only let me loose on old wrecks to start with that were going to the auctions (main Ford dealer). The number of times I went almost right through the paint along the edges of gutters or on front corners of wings etc ;D

autopia! Its full of nutters!
With those polishers (and that looks suspiciously like mine) there are a few things to remember.
Use "machine" polishes with the machine and "hand" polishes by hand. Use a squirty bottle to water cool the mop head Understand the colurs and grades of heads. Use the right one. The weight of the machine is enough, do not press on. Keep it moving. Theres a "how to" DVD / vid often sold on eBay which is a Farecla training/promo./ Worth seeing. Do not try polish hot panels Do not work in direct / strong sunlight.

Another good tip is to put the mop head on the panel BEFORE you turn it on. If you not carefull and you put a spining mop onto a panel it cal leave a semi circle mark in the paint.

Indeed. I also use the mop to smear the compound over the panel section I am working on before turning on. It helps even out the comound and gets it into the head as well.

Mr_B, do you have the latest (or was it the previous one ) issue of Practical Classics? There was a whole load of info in there, using a Porsche 924 as the victim
