Hello All
So, time has come to sell my trusty 944 S2. I've had it for 2 years, and I hope it'll find another good home. The S2 was the last 944 to be made - it has the largest engine (3 litre 16 valve) with 211 bhp and 0-60 in ~6.5 seconds. Its not as quick as the 944 turbo, but a lot of people (myself included) choose the s2 as its nicer to drive - the turbo, being fairly new tech at the time has a lot of lag and isn't as responsive. This car essentially evolved into the 968 - which was heavier with a bit more power (a dubious 40bhp claimed increase in power, more likely to be somewhere around 30) - the 968s are rarer though so fetch more money. When this car was new it's list price was in the region of £40k.
The good :
107,000 miles
MOT to September 2014 - sailed through first time
Upgraded speakers (the original ones were naff)
17" Twist Alloys
Drives very nicely indeed - pulls well in all gears, stops straight, etc
No modifications other than wheels/speakers
Lovely Retro blue check interior
Full V5 etc
I've seen 500 miles out of a tank (I think that works out at somewhere around 32mpg) - insurance was £300 as a normal daily driver (not classic insurance) for me, and tax is £240 a year.
2 keys, and full alarm/immobiliser with remote central locking
Leccy windows and sunroof all work perfectly
The bad :
Stereo is coming with me, but I'll leave full ISO wiring to plug and play your own stereo
The digital clock display is dying
the carpets by the passenger footwell have come unglued, and need re-sticking
the passenger seat has a patch on one of it's bolsters (I think it used to be the drivers seat and was swapped)
Rear tyres are low on tread, one has a screw (still holds pressure), they need replacing
MOT advisories for surface rust on brake lines, sills
VIC check when I bought it showed it had been written off in (from memory) 1997 (it might have been a year either side of that - certainly late 90s). I believe this was an impact to the front passenger side of the car, as the wing has a chip of paint missing and its red underneath! However I figured it'd been on the road for 15 years since then, it obviously isn't in a bad shape. It's perfectly fine to insure a previous write-off, but you would get a slighly lower payout than one that was not written off (the ombudsman says it should be no more than 20% less), should it be pranged again.
The boot doesn't lift open on its own. This is pretty common, its easy to open and will stay open once lifted, but it won't self-lift
Tax till April
The ugly :
This car was reversed into a month ago. I have been paid out, and that's part of the reason I'm selling. The damage is :
Badge panel dented in approx 1.5cm. This is a bolt-on panel (you have to take it off to change the air filter anyway). I don't know if this could be 'popped' out by a dent magician guy? but the panel runs about £50 second hand on ebay. One hasn't come up in the right colour in the last month (although this colour is fairly common) - so I haven't bought a replacement.
Some light scratching to both the bumper and the badge panel. Old jokes aside, I think this might t-cut out - I've no experience with doing that, but the scratches are only just through to the primer, no deeper.
There are also a couple of very light scratch marks on the drivers corner of the bumper (same part). I've included pictures of all of these.
There is rust coming through on one of the rear arches, and its just sorta starting to bubble on the sills. There are pictures of this as well
So there you have it, my 944. I've had it just under 2 years, in which time I've driven to (and round) the ring, up to a porsche day at Silverstone, a road trip to tomatina (the tomato fight in spain) - it's done very well. In the time I've had it, I've refurbished the air flow meter, fixed the sunroof auto stop mechanism, replaced the rev gauge (was bouncing), serviced her a couple of times and had the clutch bled - all in all its been a very reliable and nice car to drive. I've driven other 944s, and I honestly think mine drives just the same (my friend has one with a promax chip and there appears to be no difference in performance). The milage is very low, and if the bodywork/history was perfect it'd be a £5k car. As it is, it would make a lovely project over the winter, or just drive it how it is today, or turn it into a track car, whatever takes your fancy. Recently a more critically damaged s2 (with damage to the rear arches) sold for £1700 on ebay, with no tax, no mot, no paperwork. This car has all of those things, plus much lesser damage, so I believe the price to be roughly fair. I'm based in Brighton, and welcome any viewings or test drives, however insurance proof must be provided.
I've tried to be as honest and complete as possible with this post - please ask any questions that I may have forgotten to cover?
