I can say that's a new one on me! Never seen one before so I'm afraid I cant help you, but may know someone who can. I'll post it up on the MK2 owners forum and see what they think. Its definitely not something I'd ever fit to a car due to the need to drill the rear panel!

Finished work early thursday, so decided to get something done on the golf for a few hours while there was some light. Cleaned out both front arches. What they were like Before: DSCF1397 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr And now. Left the original waxoil as its done a good job of protecting this car: DSCF1400 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1403 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr A few nice surprises. Pretty much new Bilstein shocks (and recent springs) ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) : DSCF1401 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Calipers appear to have been rebuilt, as all the rubber bits look quite fresh. Although one is slightly different to the other (Not good for my OCD. I like things to match) and I'd say the left one has been replaced in the past. Also has vented discs and brembo pads. Brake hoses look reasonably fresh too. Discs are scored and pitted though so I will probably replace them and the pads. DSCF1402 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1404 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Also was able to check out the last rot spots. Front jacking points, and the front edge of the wings. All good and solid with no trace of rust ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) . Did find some underseal that was starting to come of though so will have to attend to that before rust creeps in. Waxoiled the area for now, but will scrape off the damaged area and redo it. Also my foam tape arrived for the Hella brake light. Got it cut to shape, exactly as per the original and fitted. Just need to get a piece of black vinyl cut and then I can fit the light. DSCF1405 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Also managed to get the 1991 MK2 brochure. Featuring the GL. Pity its not silver: DSCF1418 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1419 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr And this I didn't know. I have said I wouldn't swap my interior for anything. Now though. I would. Now its repaired it can be sold. Was a nice day today so decided to press on with this. Got down to a bit of cleaning and detailing. Didn't take many pics as was enjoying myself too much in the lovely sunny weather: Started at the back on the drivers side and worked forward, panel by panel. Scratch remover, Clay bar, paint renovator and polish. Removed the side trims and door handles as I moved along and cleaned behind them. Also oiled the door handles so they will work better. really nice golf ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I always preferred small bumpers on them but yours looks great. The mk2 is definitely the best golf Volkswagen made in both in terms of build quality and style in my opinion, really want another one, miss my old gti ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Cheers guys. Means a lot when what I do gets appreciated . Just seeing this car parked up not many would realise the amount of time and effort, and money that has gone into it.
Picked up my Dealer plates and stickers/ Tax disc holder last sunday. Awesome quality by DMB Graphics, so if anyone wants some doing they are the guys you need . Pretty much perfect copies of the originals. It will be nice to have them all back on the car :

Window sticker:

Tax disc holder. Will be furnished with a replica tax disc 'expiring' in 1992 on the month of first registration when I don't have to have a current disc anymore:
![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7320/12879359944_8f631d2e89_z.jpg) DSCF1437 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr
Service stickers. From a later period than the rest as they have a '1' in the phone number. Adds a bit of 'History':

Few more parts purchased/ arrived. Nothing exciting but every little helps. New brake discs and pads, K&N filter and a set of Bosch wiper blades. Theres actually nothing wrong with the current air filter and wiper blades, they are just not up to my quality standards. Only the best for this car.
Got myself a Weber Thursday night at a local meet. Wasn't specifically looking for one but as it was already jetted for a 1.8 MK2 and was only £20 I thought I may as well buy it. It looks scruffy and is missing the choke cable, but other than that I think its all there, but having never seen one before I don't know  . Needs a clean up and a rebuild, which I am going to have a go at myself. Should be fun . Came with a bolt on K&N too, though I wont be using it as will be sticking with the OEM airbox with a K&N panel filter I've just fitted.
New K&N. Old shop stock so was not only half price, but came in a cool retro box :

It had also been pressing onto the gasket:
![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7306/12996653174_ed570fda0e_z.jpg) DSCF1444 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr
Anyone know if it should be like that or if not how and why its wrong?
Down to todays little jobs:
Did a full valet on the polo and the interior is now cleaner than its ever been. Then got a little done on the Golf. Got the dealer sticker set fitted:
Measuring up for the window sticker placement:

![](http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3580/13016431493_3282e06b47_z.jpg) DSCF1471 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr
Also finally got the stupid manky rear badge off. and fitted proper badge clips instead of the weird ones it had. Then found that my new badge wont fit with my rubber backing. Compared the 2 badges and they have different angles to the pins and different lengths. The original also only works with the weird clips I had to break off and the pins are thicker and round. Now no badges I've got will fit So I'm stuck with this view:

Got the VAG door buffers out too. Pity I only have 2:

From what i remember the weird nut on the manifold is a captive one cast into the rubber, which the stud should screw into, was a while since i replaced one though so i may be mistaken.
Those gaskets/carb bases are very prone to perishing and then splitting so worth putting a new one on anyway.
Weber is a nice upgrade, if anything it gets rid of the Pierburg carb (had one on a 300k golf gl i had as a winter car. i went through 5 second hand ones before i got working one)
i know all about all the little bits taking ages to do, making much visual difference, spent ages cleaning and replacing loads of broken bopdged or wrong clips fasteners screws etc on my old golf.. one reason i should have kept it as then next one i buy will likely need it all done again for me to be happy with it xD

Got the plates fitted on Friday evening and took Pics today. Excuse the grey bumpers. They need to be dealt with: DSCF1480 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1479 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Got a bit more polishing/ cleaning done this afternoon. Sold the polo this morning and its now gone, so this will soon be pushed into daily service. First big trip coming up as well. All the way down to the Volksworld show, at Sandown Park on 30th March. As it happens the show is only 15 minutes from Drift Bridge Volkswagen. So I shall do a quick detour, and pop in for a quick photo on the way to the show ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Gave it its third wash, then the same detailing method as before. Pop off any trim, handles etc and use G3 scratch remover, clay bar, G3 paint renovator and Autoglym super resin polish. Started with the bonnet and moved on to the passenger side wing and front door: Bonnet all done: DSCF1481 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Pulled off the side trims. Going to get a mop and polish it some more. Then I'm going to apply my posh wax. Dodo Juice 'Light Fantastic'. 2 coats of that should do it ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) Just the roof to polish now. Should get that done tomorrow, along with fitting the new discs and pads, new wiper blades and give it a hoover out and a clean inside and clear the boot out of parts, ready for the road, hopefully on Tuesday ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) .

Long time no update! Been Busy with life so heres a run down of whats happened since I last posted: Fitted my new discs and pads. Old ones were pretty manky really: DSCF1491 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Old pads versus new: DSCF1492 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Rusty, scored old disc: DSCF1493 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Nice shiny new disc and pads all fitted: DSCF1494 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Seems to have improved the brakes a bit with the fresh parts fitted. Also made sure it had enough air in the tyres, enough fluids and the smell from the washer bottle was terrible, so emptied and cleaned it, then put some new fluid in. Fitted new Bosch wiper blades and fitted a badge, the wrong badge, but better than nothing. Next I got it taxed and insured a few days after the polo sold. Then took it to work and the problems began. Day 1: Started losing water. Was driving to work and thought I could smell coolant. Temperature was normal and no steam, so kept going. Parked up and as soon as I opened the door the smell of coolant was really strong and a pink puddle had formed and was running down the gutter. No time to fix it and couldn't get it into a garage for work, despite working next to one for a few days. Identified the problem as the thermostat housing seal though. Had to carry spare water around, but after the initial flood it was more of a drip coming out. Day 2: Water still dripping out. Time for some running issues. Had problems with pulling away and accelerating. Every time I tried to pull away it would stall and seemed to lack power. Also running poorly when cold. Smoking badly and struggling to idle for first 3-5 minutes. Seemed to be overfueling massively. Day 3: Thermostat housing sorted. And found out some of the vacuum pipes for the carb were perished badly. Replaced those and the stalling problems disappeared, but not the poor running when cold, or the smoking. Day 4-9: Still running badly when cold, Smoking, over fuelling etc. Struggled on for a while. Got an oil leak from the cam cover gasket (third one since I'd known about the car) that was quite bad, so had to check the oil. Despite the oil leaking out, the level hadn't been going down. Smelt the oil and stank of fuel so decided not to continue driving it, as there was clearly fuel getting in the oil due to the carb filling the cylinders up. Hence the smoking and struggling to run. Got it booked in to my local VW specialist to try and sort the problems. As needed a cam belt anyway as wasn't sure when it last got changed, and better safe than sorry. So was off the road for a week, which was a pain. Couldn't resist having another fiddle myself though, so got hold of a length of new vacuum pipe to replace all the fabric covered rubber pipes. All the ones that are just plain rubber looked in very good nic, yet all the other ones were perished. Already eliminated one problem by replacing a single hose, and think a previously un-noticed split in the pipe from the Vacuum store/magic sphere may have solved my cold running issues, either that, or pulling and pushing on most of the moving parts freed something up that was stuck. After replacing that pipe it started up as usual, but actually idled without any pedal input and without the juddering and over fueling. It was idling a bit low when cold at 500rpm, but its idling, and revs climbed when it warmed. Went into the garage and had the new cam belt done. Also a new cam cover gasket and oil change and fresh filter at the same time. He also tweaked the carb and its now running as good as it can, though not perfectly as still idles low when cold. Went down to GSF to order a new oil breather as found mine has a big hole in while fiddling with the carb. They had some Meguiars endurance Tyre Gel on the shelf so thought I'd buy it and give it a go after it was suggested for use on my tired bumpers. Got to work with a rag and the results were good, but not amazing. Some of the patchiness was still there. So tried rubbing harder and then using a paint brush to get into the texture, but it was too soft. So Then really scrubbed at the worst faded areas with a stiff brush. Was impressed with the results on both the tyres it is designed for, and the bumpers ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) : Front bumper before (old pic as forgot to take any today). Usual bumper black hadn't worked and washed off in the first rain shower. It still left some patches and streaks: DSCF1174 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Rear bumper before: DSCF1283 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr And the cars trim after scrubbing away with a brush and the Meguiars tyre gel: DSCF1497 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1501 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr All done ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) : DSCF1495 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1498 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1499 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1500 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr The 'Tools' and the magic purple stuff: DSCF1502 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Turns out this stuff is the best thing ever for faded trim. Lasts ages and doesn't seem to streak or wash off in heavy rain. It also works very well on tyres too ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) . Did a bit more cleaning. Just a little bit of my usual 4 step method on the roof and bottom of the bumpers. Scratch remover, clay bar, paint renovator and polish to finally finish getting a shine on. Then added a bit more shine and some protection. Two coats of Dodo Juice 'light Fantastic' went on ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) . Roof. Looks a bit dull in the pic for some reason: ![](https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3712/13521810603_46745f8ed1.jpg) Bonnet shows the shine better ![](https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2940/13521781693_3bc71c692b.jpg) Whole car: ![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7094/13521804173_7d69437b26.jpg) Gave the interior its first hoover out and clean out. Looks even better inside now. Just a shame about the wear hole in the drivers mat, but that's too be expected given that the mats are 23 years old and have seen over 130k of action! ![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7095/13521700295_a28774787e.jpg) ![](https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3833/13521788883_57527e1a2e.jpg) ![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7177/13521694895_b1c311243c.jpg) Replaced the rotten shrunk outer scrapers with nice new ones. Well 3 of them. Right rear had been out of stock forever on Heritage. Decided I couldn't be bothered waiting for it anymore so compared the fronts to the one rear I had. Identical in every way except length, and as I had to cut the fronts to fit 5 door anyway, ordered another left front and decided to just flip it round and cut it down. Wish I'd thought of that before, as fronts are £5 cheaper than rears! Top tip for anyone else though ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Lovely and fresh. ![](https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3827/13522020394_7360ff057b.jpg) ![](https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3759/13521800873_afde608e76.jpg) And a pic of the new sticker. A replica of an original VAG period one: ![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7402/13521706225_9108cd1227.jpg) Another box of parts from Heritage turned up as well, so got some of them fitted. Bought a pair of new, Genuine rear quarter window rubbers, a left front outer window scraper for the right rear window, a badge clip for the interior mirror cover as passenger side was missing one and rattled, and an air box front rubber mount. Got the air box mount fitted, the mirror cover on properly. Then fitted the window scraper. A genuine WTF moment. My oil breather hose (cam cover to air box) was on its last legs and had several holes and a split at one end. Decided to replace it but the one I ordered from GSF was far too small in diameter and too long. So ordered another from ebay, after GSF ordered in every different one they stocked and none were right! Ebay one turned up after a few days and Surprise, Surprise. It was wrong, but it had the right angle and was only a bit smaller diameter. So cut it down to size. When I removed the old oil breather, the holes on the under side had clearly been deliberately cut in: ![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7141/13642028454_6a69d6027d.jpg) There was also a build up of oil in the air box inlet. So investigated and pulled this from the pipe. It was rolled up and pushed inside to block it! ![](https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3737/13641715343_e3f50340ff.jpg) Totally confused as to why anyone would do this, but it has to have been done for a reason, surely.

Managed to get the Golf to its first ever show. GTI Spring Fest at Santa Pod on 6th April. Made the 3.5 hour round trip with no problems. Well almost, did have a very minor hiccup. Some pics of it on the MK2 Golf Owners club stand: ![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7313/13745565684_832dcfdefe.jpg) ![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7221/13745194863_100e57605e.jpg) ![](https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2866/13745561594_bee2b7e35f.jpg) The minor hiccup I spoke of. Stereo went off to the distinctive pop of a blown fuse, about a mile from the pod. Pulled into Wellingborough Halfords to investigate. Bought some fuses and put one in. Blew. Took the stereo out and tried another. Blew again. So not the stereo. Drove home in silence, which is something I hate doing as its soooo boring! Investigated further as there had to be a short somewhere. Checked all the wires at stereo and fuse box and all were fine, as were all the connections. Put a thread up in the tech section. Was reminded the ciggy lighter shares fuse 22. So pulled the centre console out to check the wiring for that. Fine. For some reason I looked down into the lighter and there it was. A small piece of metal, like a washer, from a phone/ sat nav charger wedged in the lighter and touching against the contacts! So all this for nothing! ![](https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7073/13745037474_5d21767464.jpg) Fitted the only thing I bought from the show while fiddling with the fuse box. 99 Relay. How I've missed it since selling the polo and leaving mine in it. So useful: ![](https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3781/13745035394_66b2400738.jpg) Now repping the MK2 Owners club too ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) : ![](https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5065/13745032954_fde47fce4d.jpg) And to bring things bang up to date. Had a bit of holiday, but ended up doing very little and rocker gasket tried to set the car on fire by dumping oil all over the inlet manifold. Certainly got me out quick! Smokin! 5th gear is getting a bit tricky and gear stick a bit floppy. So time for one of these kits to rebuild the linkage. Yet to be fitted: DSCF1609 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Decided to strip down my tilt and slide, ready to send the roof panel for paint: DSCF1620 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1621 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Stripped bare: DSCF1622 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Time for a clean up: Before: DSCF1623 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1624 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr After: DSCF1625 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr DSCF1626 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Its an absolute minter of a panel. No dents, chips or even scratches. Most importantly no rust. Almost a shame to sand it down and spray it silver! Hopefully solved the on going saga of the leaky rocker gasket. Current gasket is 5th its had since I've known about it and 3rd since owning it. Did everything right this time. Rubber gasket, perfectly clean mounting surfaces and only hand tightened. Couldn't not give the rocker cover a spruce up while it was off. So out came the wet or dry and satin black spray: Just love fresh paint: DSCF1631 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr All fitted and a big improvement. Before: DSCF1096 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr After: DSCF1632 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr Also a little find at 'Bus Types' show at the weekend. NOS mud flap badges. Not a lot of use to me as mine have moulded in badges, but still cool: DSCF1639 by daniel5fuller, on Flickr

OOPs. Over a year since I posted in this thread. A few things have happened. Cant really be bothered to do a full run down but heres a quick run over with some pics of whats happened: Refurbed sunroof parts and sunroof clean up: DSCF1794 by daniel fuller, on Flickr DSCF1799 by daniel fuller, on Flickr DSCF1802 by daniel fuller, on Flickr Crack free foot rest trim: DSCF1804 by daniel fuller, on Flickr New pedal rubbers: DSCF1805 by daniel fuller, on Flickr Full refurb on my Votex VW Design alloys. Dipped, powder coated black, diamond cut and lacquered by a Bentley specialist none the less. Both me and the guys there were blown away by how well they came up considering the corrosion. Then brand new Falken Ziex tyres and balanced. Some of the straightest wheels the guys at the tyre place had come across. These wheels are just awesome IMO, and being an option on MK2's in the 80's makes them perfect for my OEM theme. Just love watching people notice the VW logo's in the spokes. So subtle yet obvious once you realise ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) : DSCF2029 by daniel fuller, on Flickr DSCF2030 by daniel fuller, on Flickr DSCF2054 by daniel fuller, on Flickr DSCF2056 by daniel fuller, on Flickr Fitted my Hella steering wheel. Love this thing: DSCF2064 by daniel fuller, on Flickr Went onto the land of ebay Germany. Won myself another rare accessory for a bargain price. Brand new, boxed, Votex parcel shelf under tray. The most useful thing ever and damn cool and super rare to boot ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) : DSCF2144 by daniel fuller, on Flickr

Unfortunately my old Panasonic with the aux input died shortly after I fitted it. After all that effort stripping it and finding those damn bulb covers I wasn't happy ![x_x](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/dead.png) . One channel on the amp went dead so went back to a miserable modern setup. Booo. Luckily it was only in a week. Went to my favourite scrappy and found another, slightly different, older Panasonic with aux. Slotted it in and worked perfectly and even lit up green ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) : 'New' one on top: DSCF2161 by daniel fuller, on Flickr In and working ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) : DSCF2164 by daniel fuller, on Flickr Also got a sharan/ galaxy accelerator pedal rubber in same trip to the scrappy. Much better than just bare metal: DSCF2166 by daniel fuller, on Flickr DSCF2167 by daniel fuller, on Flickr Also a better door trim without a kink in it: DSCF2320 by daniel fuller, on Flickr Fischer C box cassette holder added. Its still awaiting refurbishment: DSCF2693 by daniel fuller, on Flickr Ordered a few new genuine parts from VW Classic parts centre in Germany. Then winter came and I bought some standard 14" steels to save the Votex from the salt.

Being me I couldn't run JUST steelies. Had to dress them up. Managed to stumble over a set of original mid '80's Hella wheel trims on ebay. Had only ever seen them in an old brochure I've got so was quite happy to grab them when nobody else bid ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

Into 2015 we go!
First show of the year was Dub freeze. Only in the car park for this one so no nice show pic. Picked a couple of rare Hella spoilers for an absolute steal. Mint boxed and straight from the 80's/ early 90's. So retro cool:

Sadly lost both of my Grandparents late last year and early this year. Found this retro sticker from when Merry Hill shopping centre opened in a drawer while clearing there house. Thought it fitted in on the car:

After a long search eventually grabbed a pair of shelf supports in navy blue at a small show:
DSCF8206 by daniel fuller, on Flickr
Went down to Volksworld show at Sandown Park in march. Weather was awful for the drive down and car got filthy. However on the way home I deided to detour about 15 minutes and find the supplying dealer, wher the car was bought new in 1991. Here it is outside Drift Bridge Garage Epsom. Still trading from the same dealership with same phone no.!

Yes. I went insane and bought a rusty camper project which decided after a week it didn't want to run properly. Turned out needed an engine along with pretty much everything else! It sat on my garden for a bit then moved in here. The lock up I am renting with a mate and my Mom:

Well that's all up to date now. Its been a while, so if you bothered to go through and read it all then thanks ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)
New thread coming soon when I start on the camper.
