Yeah the clocks and the recaro seats are out of some sort of Manta I believe. The seats and carpets have been dyed black and the dash is painted black too - it all fits in nicely but I think originally the seats, dash and carpets were blue and I think I'd prefer that! Ride height looks more purposeful but not as 'ard! I've grown to appreciate it though I've spotted your Cav, it looks ace and the plans sound good too!

Lovely look machine chap and the color is awesome!
As for the new springs I have to agree it looks much better for it, you have to balance looks with driveability. IMO it still looks just as cool! Love the rear end on these Cavs

It's yet an other example of the sort of car I never took any notice of when they were all over the place in the 80s, but with a few subtle mods nd the passage of time just comes alive.

Well, we piled just under 600 miles on the Cav in 3 days this weekend and it took it in its stride and never missed a beat! Starting in Ormskirk where I graduated on Friday, we then hot tailed it to Maidstone for a family wedding (made the party!) before waking up the next day and shooting on over to Santa Pod Raceway for the Mopar Euro Nats! Cracking weekend to say the least and the Cav was spot on the whole time. As we all know, it's been absolutely roasting and the trip down south on Friday took over 7 hours! Luckily, I'd managed to snatch a bit of a retro accessory bargain at Tatton Park's Stars and Stripes show a few weekends back in the form of an old 12v oscillating fan! £1.. and it worked without any messing about. I like to imagine it came from an old muscle car(it probably came from an Allegro circa 1987). Anyway, it certainly did its job of keeping us cool. I had a spare Mazda MX5 Nardi wheel from the one that was crashed into a few years back. It had really bad lacquer so I began by sanding it down.. for 3 hours! Got a few tasty blisters from that. Kept sanding.. and I sanded it a bit more Masked it up and gave it about 7 fine coats of satin wood varnish aerosol

and here it is in place of the original turny circle accompanying the £1 fan.. Looks cool, pretty pleased how it turned out to be honest. The centre is sanded down 2.8i pepperpot centre but I might give it a coat of matt black - I have a none dented one somewhere so I'll dig that out I think

Love this car The first car I remember is my dads Ascona Berlina in a similar colour to this. Such a nice looking car all round and a really nice interior too. And look at all them gauges you get! You needed to buy a Ghia Cortina even just to get a rev counter!

Lovely steering wheel.
I restored an old Mountney once so I know the satisfaction you get every time you drive the car knowing you did that.
Loving the 12V fan, looks like something you'd fit to some old Kenworth truck in the states going 'East bound and down' with the Bandit.

I had a 1982 Cortina L in Crystal green and funnily enough we were comparing the two at the weekend! The Cortina was more comfy, but then it had the standard seats and ride height so it was bound to be! Loved that car! Forgot to mention, when we were getting the BBQ and gear out the Cav my mate Rich spotted that the boot light didn't work. Bit of WD and some fiddling and it was sorted- score! However, due to the calm weather and need for beer we didn't bother with tent pegs for our tents. Rich abandoned his in favour of his car to avoid the noisy party in the field. Next morning we woke up to his tent barrel rolling over the top of ours and then over the Cav, snapping the ariel clean off!

Well, the Cav's been fulfilling its daily duties with no dramas as usual! Tidied up the crusty looking front valance by grinding away the surface rust and Kurusting it followed by a quick coat of matt black. When it was slammed I managed to rip the bottom of the drivers wing away from the valance on a manhole, so I set about 'fixing' that.. I just drilled a few holes and 'sewed' them together with cable ties! The bottom of the valance and the wing are a bit tatty anyway so it just tidies it up a bit. I went round the car kurusting any brown bits and I also re stone-chipped all the bits underneath that had been scratched away when it was too low. Then the other day this happened.. What's missing?

Not updated my Cav thread in a while - it's been performing daily duties admirably for some time now. Having issues at the moment but I'll get to that. First update, I guess, is that I've upgraded the sound system. Had a stereo in there that meltedcheese and I have used in our cars for the past 13 years, but sadly it bit the dust! Now I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to sound quality so I thought I'd upgrade it (on the cheap, obv) and see what's about. Having not bought a new stereo for 13 years, i was amazed to see you can buy them minus a cd deck these days, and that is a bit cheaper to boot! Got a great deal in Halfords and duly fitted a bluetooth stereo, discretely fitted a microphone for hands free and voice control, as it hooks up to the siri equivalent on my Android phone. Seems odd talking to a 1978 car to ask for particular tracks or to Google stuff - it's a bit like KITT now! The speakers are beefy JVC 300watt items in the rear shelf but they sounded parp even with the new stereo. Gutted! I did a bit of research into the amp I'd need (I'm not really up on that sort of thing) and bought one from surprisingskoda, for a great price. Sounds flipping great now! I think the whole cavernous boot acts as a bit of a sub box as the bass isn't half punchy.

Wasn't really a lot to report for a while, as i was getting stuck into a new job and the Cav was getting me there and back every day with no fuss (other than 23mpg feeling a bit painful for around 65bhp). I looked into 5 speed conversions but they're a bit more involved than I'd hoped and don't currently have the time. I had the old Solex carb tuned by my mate at his Classic garage and it ran a little better but he said that it was leaning out pretty badly at high revs. It deffo ran better afterwards though. Unfortunately, the auto choke decided to give up the ghost just when the weather turned a bit. It was therefore a bit of a pain to start and ran like an hamster playing the drums for 5 minutes every morning. I looked into replacing the carb but figured I may as well improve the power and fuel economy at the same time...... Behold..... A nice brand new Weber 32/36 dgv carb oughta give it a bit more clout. The base plate is exactly the same shape as the solex, so I hoped it'd be a straight swap for instant horsepowahs and mpg improvement. I was kind of right! Bought a tasty free flow filter for good measure

Once I'd got it all hooked up and the fuel line sorted i give it a whirl and it started brilliantly - sounded great too. But it was quite clear that the accelerator cable was never going to work. It needed to operate the pivot at a completely different angle. I curse word about with it for a few hours trying to bodge it with various items -including the brake cable from my chopper - but to no avail! Ended up car sharing with my better half for a couple of weeks. In the end I had to buy a capri accelerator bracket and cable to make it work.

It's not ideal, the angle isn't perfect so the pedal is a little harder to press, but it is useable at least. Or it was! Looks better, goes better and sounds better! Exhaust doesn't pop and crackle any more sadly, but I guess that means it's more efficient now!
