I like big, old luxo barges and the idea of eventually owning one has always been at the back of my mind. I've trawled Ebay when I've been bored and the factors I always look at are - Value for money Comfort Running costs Speed I've always found big, French "luxury" motors to be VERY comfy and pleasant places to be and you also get a lot of car for the money with all the toys. Parts are plentiful and usually cheap. The Peugeot 605 is a lovely motor but there ain't many about.

Having driven french hot hatches and mild saloons for ten years, ANYTHING else seems like a wafty barge !!
So i love my e34 tds for being able to jump in and just drive, get where i want to not deaf or achey, but i still love the french tin boxes!

Hard to look past Mercedes - W124 or W126 - bullet proof, comfortable and still respectable looking.

Not particularly retro, but along the same lines as an LS400 - what about an early Honda Legend?

If you can find one that isn't rusty,an old w210 Mercedes in elegance trim is an excellent move, the ride is lovely.

Volvo 240, my mate has one that he'd give up if someone waved £500 in front of him. I've never sat in anything so comfy, heated seats too!

The Citroen CX is probably the smoothest riding car I have ever travelled in, but for me, it does not have a big enough engine for true wafting. They're unique though, and endlessly fascinating. Agree completely with this. Physically they are the most comfortable car and although they only had 4 cylinder engines they are surprisingly pacey and handle well. However you have to live with poor ventilation, but they are sublime. This needs some pics: However, if I was to have something which I could use more everyday my choice would be an XJ Jag.

I would go for an LPG converted X300 Jaguar XJ6. I got mine for just over 1k and it was superb, it had a slight running fault that ultimately made me sell it, but it was an absolute joy to own and very practical indeed on the LPG. It had a boot mounted tank and there was still loads of space in there! Look for a good one and you won't regret it.

another vote for the Citroen XM here - get your head around how the hydraulic system works, and it'll be putty in your hands Had a diesel version myself, only came as an auto, based on the ever-reliable XUD engine, but upped to 2.1L and boasts a 12v head for even more low down grunting stump-pulling torque. Can easily be made to give 180Bhp, whilst still giving rather good mpg. The sofas.. sorry, seats, were so damned soft and spacious, it's as if they literally took a sofa, and put electric controls into one! They're also.... chuffing HUGE

For me it would have to be one of these. You should get a decent enough example of both although the gsi,s are getting hard to find and even harder to find a good one they are brilliant motorway barges. On the other you may get a mk1 tax exempt p6

Volvo 340/360 - seats are the comfiest I've sat in, heated as standard and the car is generally just a comfy barge The renault engined 340s get fairly decent fuel economy too, but obviously not as bombproof as the real volvo engined 360.

I visited my folks at christmas and was pleasantly surprised to see this (below) on their driveway. My dad had one 25 years ago and now he's bought another, it's a 1987 CX22TRS. I had a go and I have to say what a wonderful ride, full of nostalgia. 1.7 turns lock to lock and with diravi completely effortless, brakes nearly shot me through the windscreen, it's been years since I'd driven a proper Citroen. Quiet, almost refined but I completely forgot how complex they are, especially after spending 5 days looking for the LHM leak. IMG_2391 by simes205, on Flickr

Poor ventilation is a known weakness on CXs.

Still got 3 months tax too.it does require the passanger window motor to get fixed. . Big ,cumfy , and sounds great aswell and it has a bosch pump so you could rub on straight veg .
