My old man has a Volvo 960 2.9 straight six auto. He's been mentioning the occasional "thump" from the gearbox for a while, and as I was visiting over Xmas I managed to have a look.
It's a bit of an odd one - it drives nice and smooth most of the time, gearchanges are good, kickdown is OK. When I was in it, the "thud" happened at about 50 mph, and it didn't seem to be as it was changing gear, although I suppose it could have been trying to change into 4th. There was a second "thud" about 5 seconds after. During this, the car was driving fine. It doesn't always happen at the same speed. That was the only time it did it on a 20+ mile journey.
I'm pretty certain it's the gearbox, and the thud feels identical to the one I had in a BMW e34 although on that occasion the 'box had shat itself.
The gear oil and filter was changed as soon as he got it, just as routine maintenance. The oil level is fine too. Car has done about 110k.
The internet is a bit thin on info, although I read something about the gearbox ECU playing up on these.
Any ideas chaps?
