More progress - I was not happy with the temperature gauge capilliary tube, it was fixed with 6 cable ties and pvc tape along the bonnet rod. So I found some black fabric adhesive tape on the net and wound that all along the rod to hold the tube much less obviously. I also had help to mount the bonnet correctly with most of the chrome trims in place to hold the leather straps, put the two spare wheels in place and then put the four polished cover plates around the front of the bulkhead. The remaining jobs are dashboard electrics to finish, seats to mount and headlamps to re-install.

I always pictured these cars as sort of smallish, but it doesn't look so small when next to something else! Coming along great! So what happens when it's finished? It goes off on some rally somewhere? Do you get to drive it first? D:

It is entered on the "Flying Scotsman Rally" over Easter - hence the need to get it finished now in time to run it in before the rally. I don't know if I will get to actually drive it - we shall see..... Ian - it would be great to have you as my riding mechanic......And I have never been in one before. I've now got the headlamps on and horns finished and fitted. Pics to follow.

Headlamps now re installed - very fiddly with tiny brass screws, tagged wires onto a bakalite block that fits in a metal housing beneath the headlamp. Then the horns had the new mesh grilles fitted and they were wired up - more fiddly screws! So that was the front end finished. The final two bolts were fitted through the back body frame and the seat belt mounting eye bolts were tightened in place. The two ventilation flaps had all new 6BA stainless screws and nylock nuts fitted. And the dashboard wiring loom was tidied ready for installation tomorrow.

A frustrating day as I had to take off and partially strip one of the doors - it had a tiny "ding" that we could not pull out or access the back to push out, so it has had to be skimmed and resprayed. Then I did most of the dashboard wiring and got stuck on the cubby "tray" on and off 4 times trying to get it lined up!

Hopefully on Monday I will have finished all the major work. PS Georgeb - I like your Hill Railway, the engineering on the Bentley is similar in places it seems

Thanks Dabhand and Georgeb. I rebuilt the door and rehung it. I had to pack underneath the leather to get the door catches in the correct position to engage on the latch plate - another fiddly job... Then it was under the dashboard to get the earth wires grounded and the final four wires connected - but I did not have enough detail on the pictures that I took of behind the dash so a couple of wires had to be "estimated" as to their position Then the seats were put in and the owner paid a visit....... He was pleased that it was just about done but then we couldn't get it started and various electrical things did not work - a bit of a blow but not totally unexpected as I could not test as I went along as I had no wiring diagram or knowledge of how it is meant to work - yet! Anyway, my Wife had baked and decorated a cake to celebrate the completion - which I have shared around the workshop to the many people who helped to get it this far.

Such an amazing rebuild, you're doing justice to an absolutely fabulous car. I'm guessing they were build to a very high standard which you seem to be replicating. That Vesa loom tape is ace, I've been using that on a few projects at work.

Thanks Wagoneer
TODAY THE ENGINE STARTED......................
I had a long session on the wiring to the ignition and light switches and finally found the correct combination to get it all working - it didn't help that a wire to the Ammeter had also come loose on the terminal with all the dashboard moving.

must have been a rewarding moment! Well it certainly was an extremely relieved moment! It does sound very special though - very "Basso Profundo" And yes "luckyjim", - my wife does like to get things "right" - she is still working on me!!! Anyway I spent some time detailing the car today - painting bolt heads with green where they are on show and with the grey stone chip inside the mudguards. I also used the paint to contrast the logo on the foot step plates. Earlier, I mentioned the scuttle vents where I got new 6BA screws (which all needed shortening) - when I put them on the car I made a conscious effort to line up all the screw head slots vertical and tightened them from inside - it was a finicky detail which may not ever be noticed - particularly as the vents are behind the spare wheels now! Another detail was the fuel tank mounting block with its spherical bearing inside the two aluminium castings. Here are the pictures showing these arrangements.

More little finishing jobs which take lots of time for very little visible change! The leather covered blocks that the seat locks into for adjustment needed longer screws - so trips to fastener suppliers in the locality as they are special sizes..... Anyway the seats are now in position and the hood goes up.

Thanks Eurogranada - Moss have done a great job. The owner visited today and was pleased to see and hear the engine start! All the electrics work and all the mechanical work is done. Only the front carpet is needed to be fitted and I collected that tonight so Monday will see it completed. Also fitted are the rally plates for the "Flying Scotsman Rally" - apparantly there will be 18 Bentleys so it will be spectacular! One of the final jobs was to get the wipers to be more effective. After a close examination the main problem was the arm slipping on the motor spindle. There was supposed to be a locking collet but the slotted brass cone had worn so much it was not gripping before it bottomed out and couldn't be tightened any more. A new collet would be ideal but would probably have to be specially machined so I filed the bottom off the collet so it now does not bottom when tightened and it grips the spindle properly - job done sorry but no pictures of that ,....so to make up....
