Brilliant work on a corking car. It's fantastic. You know that "if you could have any car, money no object" question... For me it's an old Bentley. You can have all the Ferraris and Lambos. Just let me have an old Bentley.
Top marks to the owner too. I hate cars in museums, they look dead and soulless. The owner clearly uses the Bentley, makes it work for a living. I have no idea if W.O. would approve but I certainly do.
Well done all round and thanks for posting.
James

Thanks Eurogranada - the top up does give it amazing "Presence" but the top down has more style I think. I was taken out in the Bentley yesterday and it certainly was an experience - My admiration for those racing drivers of yesterday - and today, has increased even further! The ride was very harsh at first until it had done a few miles then it became far more compliant - especially noticeable on our local poor "B" back roads. The torque was amazing, bags of grunt from low speed upwards. You do sit very high up and it feels as if it would tip over cornering too sharply - however I was assured(?) that it slides at the back end first - and is difficult to catch! It cruised along very nicely, doing an easy 65 on one straight and that was using about a quarter throttle with the exhaust gently burbling away behind us. When accelerating the exhaust blaars, then roars, as the speed just keeps increasing - until the next bend...... Anyway, during the trip a new wiper motor was purchased as the original was still playing up and so I have to do that change. Also the rear seats are out and the "Rally" box put in place to get ready for the "Flying Scotsman Rally" The front carpet and gearlever gaitor installed

Looks like you get to modify the new wiper motor before fitting... Seems that's going to be a nice little job as well then!
I love your description of the ride!

Ergonomics? Pah!
That dash is lovely, as is the whole car. A credit to you and the other guys.

Put Alonso or Hamilton in one of these and get them to drive fast. Not a hope! They would spend all their time looking for the frappuccino or large pay cheque buttons

Beautiful car, Amazing work. I've seen a few of these (and their supercharged stablemates) driven in anger at the Le mans Classic a few times...it must take some guts!
Not so sure about Hamilton though, he's ok in an older car! He was recently driving a 1938 W154 and 1954 W196 around the Nurburgring!

Thanks for the comments and links After the test run there were various jobs that needed sorting, one was the sidelight bulb in the OS headlamp not working. I was concerned that it might be a fiddly job to get to the bulb but No - I just had to undo the big chromed screw at the top of the grille and the whole front of the unit hinged down and the new festoon lamp was easily fitted. Incidentally the old bulb looked to have an unbroken filament but it just didn't work so there probably was a break just inside one of the end caps. Certainly the job was a lot easier than on many modern car headlamps! Another problem was the rev counter being erratic and then stopping working. I pulled it from the dashboard and the drive cable was still secure at the back. I undid it and started the engine - the inner cable was not rotating so I had to unscrew the other end from the bulkhead and the back of the engine. It was broken at the engine fitting - a sort of quill drive that turned out to have been soldered to the inner cable......Fortunately I was able to get the bits of wire out. On the outer cable I had to take the end off and shorten it - resecuring the fitting. Then the quill drive had to be resoldered. All put back in place and we now have a working rev counter. The rally box has been secured in place and the two piece tonneau cover put on the car, spares etc loaded and it is ready to go to Scotland.

Did you already fit the new wiper motor?

Did you already fit the new wiper motor? Yes - I forgot to mention that - I had to shorten the inner spindle and outer sleeve then the new collet was just too small, so I have used the modified older collet and it seems to lock onto the new shaft OK.

Just checked on the Rally Website (Flying Scotsman Rally) after the first day and the Bentley is in 71st position, about 16 mins down on the leaders. I must confess a sense of relief that it is now up in the North of England and running OK........

I bet cleaning it doesn't have the same interest as fettling it?
