There was only 1 Quattro
Eveything else is "just" a quattro,a trim level-type badge that shows the car has 4wd

the 80 quattro was available not long after the ur , so it was a brand more or less from the start i suppose in that regard, a lot of the early quattro cars are sort of forgotten or not appreciated enough thesedays

Ditto. I saw that ad and thought just the same thing.
IIRC the original was something dreamt up by a team of Audi engineers 'out-of-hours'? Did I remember that right?

IIRC the original was something dreamt up by a team of Audi engineers 'out-of-hours'? Did I remember that right? Nah, it was a legit, big budget assault by Audi. I think Piech was in charge at the time and it was an intellectual and technical c*ck-sizing exercise to prove they were miles ahead of the game. Group B legitimised it and made it glamorous but this is where it all started. This is an Auto Union Munga that I saw in Italy a few years ago. Munga is an abbreviation of Mehrzweck Universal Geländewagen mit Allradantrieb (Multi Purpose Off Road Car with Four Wheel Drive). I think they should have stuck with the full name.

UR Quattro's are one of those cars that when you look at pictures, you think "nice"....but when you stand next to one, those bulging arches makes it look 10 times as badass, and you just want to sell everything you have to get one!!! We only have a handful here, and a few years ago I could get one for cheap....still get annoyed with myself for not pulling the trigger, and will probably keep feeling that way till I die.

The worst thing in my opinion is that the quattro name has been diluted in recent years by being applied to models with the cheapo Haldex viscous coupling-based FWD/pert-time 4WD system instead of the mechanical permanent 4WD system first used on the Ur Quattro (though even that has now lost it's Torsen centre differential in favour of a open diff and clutch plates linking the two output shafs to allow the torque split to be controlled electronically).

This is my one, had it for yonks now, can't imagine any other car that I would feel the same way about. IMHO not one of the newer Audi's come close.

At risk of being burnt at the RR stake as a heretic, the early quattros handled like pigs. Certainly the 80q and 90q (both of which I rallied) understeered more than anything I've ever driven. That big engine hung out over the front wheels means there's NO chance of getting the back end to break away.
I was never lucky enough to drive a 'proper' turbo q, but I can only imagine you just hit the hedge with the front wing even quicker!
However, once you've gone around the corner, boy are they quick!! I can still remember the smiles I used to get pulling away at t-junctions - the ability to put down so much power, so quickly - quite amazing!

LOL...I remember Walter Röhrl saying the exact same thing. I think he actually crashed one trying to get to grips with the style of driving it required, saying the stupid thing just refused to turn. EDIT:Correction...he didn't call it a stupid thing.... www.classicandsportscar.com/news/csc-features/all-hail-the-mighty-quattro-%E2%80%93-star-of-stage-and-screenThat said, he did figure it out eventually.......

We had the 80q for a couple of years and the 90q for about 6 months until tighten noise regs meant we just couldn't get through scruitneering with them Not long after that they banned 4WD and more than 4 cylinders on the clubman rallying I was doing, and that's more or less when we jumped ship and started doing Enduro events with a Rover 200...BIG come down!! There's a lady with a BEAUTIFUL Ur q at work (could be the red car in the C&S article linked below). Makes my heart flutter every time I see it! A Ur q is definitely on my 'lottery garage list'...or maybe a Lynx conversion?! Together with a Stratos and an RS200!! And maybe a Renault 5T2, and a T16. Oh and can I have an RS Mexio Mk1 in apple green with forest arches please? And a Delta too? [damn, 2nd edit!] Sunbeam Lotus... <dribble, dribble, dribble>
