For sale a 1964 Triumph Herald 1200
The car is in really great condition for it age (50 years last week!!), but I am selling as a project as this car will not be fit to get through an MOT in current condition. Nor drive away.
I bought the car last year after wanting one for many years, and have dry stored it since. I have been starting it weekly and driving it around the yard to ensure nothing seizes. However, I cannot commit to the work needing doing, and my daily requires the time and attention (and funds) ahead of this.
It’s a solid car with a decent complete chassis (from what I can see). There has been some welding on the chassis in the past which doesn't look pretty…. However, it is functional. There is also slight damage where someone has jacked the car on a rail and it has folded in a bit.
The panels have had various works over the years (the majority of which is metal!) and from a couple of feet away… everything looks solid and nearly even straight (if you have bad eyes maybe)! A little bit of touching up will be needed to get this car looking great.
As with any Triumph of this age, panel gaps and fitment was not on the top of the priorities when building this car, so, as hopefully the pictures show, the lines of the car are getting there…. However, just not quite up to modern standard.
No idea who chose the interesting paintwork, I refer to it as swamp green, but I have seen two other triumph models in a similar colour so it could even be on the spectrum somewhere. The paintjob isn't great, and as you can see from pics there are a few patches of primer/other greens dotted about the car.
The engine is the standard 1200 single carb unit, which I was told when I bought it had been rebuilt by the previous owner (a lorry mechanic), however I cannot confirm this. What I can say is it does start (2/3 goes usually), it smells like its running pretty rich, and has been converted to running on unleaded. The engine also has an accuspark dizzy conversion and an alternator conversion. There is a couple if drops of oil on my garage floor, but literally a couple, so nothing of concern I doubt.
Brakes…. Awful. Drums all round and they will stop the car, but not in within the distance you may want. They don’t leak so it could be as simple as trapped air.
Suspension… seems all good to me, nothing appears too warn, however, I would be inclined to change bushes and bearing as I don’t know how long the car sat before I took her.
Interior is in good condition, black leather seats which are not currently bolted to anything (the holes in the floor have opened out allowing the seats to come straight out. Not a hard job for someone who can weld. There is no carpet in the car, I was told it was removed to prevent damp and lost years ago… not sure where it might be now, but I doubt it would be difficult to source one.
Its had a new fuel tank at some point so no issues there, and literally a boot full of spares. Including another cylinder head and a remote servo system for the brakes.
Clocks say 64K on them…. Last MOT in 2010 says 86K so no idea how that has happened…. Lots of reverse driving maybe?
Dash is all nice and complete, wood in great condition. Has also had some headlight upgrades to take H4 bulbs I think…. Anyway, the light actually work and are not light a candle in the desert.
To try to show the colour off in all its glory, I have chucked all the pics through pixlr autofix… sorry if some look odd but the phone couldn’t capture the colour in these lovely grey afternoons we have.
Any questions, please ask.
I have just moved house and have yet to get internets sorted so apologies for any slow responses.
