Next up was the steering and front suspension. Because I lowered the rack 50mm, and the car has 40mm lowered Spax springs which cannot hold the weight of the car, so is probably a total of a 100mm front end drop The steering just cant cope, bump steer is massive, just push down on the front of the car and the wheel turns, there is no adjustment left on the tie rods or ends. Its been giving me massive headaches as 1. I cannot fit modified Tie rod ends legally 2. I cannot modify the hub legally 3. The car has to be engineered and licensed 4. To be licensed the car can only have 2 degrees of bump steer 5. I can fix the problem after its licensed easy enough with said modified tie rod ends So to get it licensed I have raised the car back up using VW Amarok springs I had lying around Not ideal but its done the job, its given me a 75mm height increase and pretty much eliminated all my steering issues Tie rods are now flat as they used to be. And I can still actually bounce the car, long term I thing I will run Holden Torana V8 springs Ive never been so excited for a ride height increase! Doesn't look tooooo bad. Anyway heres a few shots from when I washed it on sunday, still requires a lot of work visually and mechanically but getting there.

Ive wired in a lot of the guages, a new horn, and thermo fans and tried the ECU but the car wont crank ECU Powers up and fuel pump triggers, but no life to the starter, it probably has something to do with the inhibitor switch on the auto but even when I put 12v direct to the starter solonoid it still does not crank....which I thought it would? anyway heres a bit more progress August update First things first, electric aerial big success, even if i never get this car running I feel because of the aerial alone the build will be seen as a success Its operated off the standard original radio, and that is the Radios only function now. Now the boring stuff, Fan belt. No PS or AC mean a new fan belt needing sourcing, I ordered a 6PK780 fan belt from Europe I did differ in my mounting however, I found a very simple solution by chance by using an L shaped bracket from my spare motor, which fitted perfectly and provides perfect tension Now I moved into my wiring phase Interior light never worked, this would be why Cleaned up it all up and added an LED Bulb Wired in the new GPS Speedo, this again is an easy option for the problem of Manta mechanical speedo drive and Toyota digital speedo output, few wires to connect, and the 3 3/8" dial fits perfectly into the Manta dash, no cutting involved. Has lots of cool features as well, such as 0-100 and 400m times Now to wiring in the ECU I based my wiring setup on this information, its a wiring diagram to get a 1UZ running, but to suit a Toyota CROWN, not a SC400 like mine, so wire colours don't match, but the principal is the same and with the SC400 Pinout printout I also have I set to it Tracing and marking wires A bit messy but all hooked in Relays mounted on a bracket which is mounted to ECU to save space, I also used a separate fuse box This is where I am at now, and I have wired in an ECU check light which comes on with ignition, fuel pump runs on ignition, Starter relay clicks on key start ignition....but wont crank?

Few other little bits Made a little radiator tray, to neaten things up, and aid air flow. Its metal but painted to look plastic, looks a little funny in the shot, but the idea is to look factory, the radiator tanks will be painted black to....no chrome, anodized fittings, or braided hoses on this car. New Bosch horn....old one still worked.....but was badly weathered New washer bottle, replaced all original 'Clear' (was more a murky yellow) windscreen and headlamp washer hoses, with new 4.5mm black hosing, convoluted tubing everywhere to neaten wiring...also added a Blue LED globe to the under bonnet and Boot lights, because ummmm..............well......just accept it I also made the original bottom 1UZ Soarer hose fit this car with no modification which was one less headache!

^ I think I have September update: Pretty boring stuff here, but it all has to be done! The sum total I will be spending on a Diff that could last 5 minutes or 5 years Some trim work Before: After: Stereo install6" rear speakers, on Spacers, so no holes cut in Parcel shelf Front in-dash speaker was a strange 6"x3" sizing, so I just used a spare 4.5" speaker I had which I spaced down so as it had room to move Powered by a Bluetooth Amplifier mounted under the seat Obviously sound quality wasn't a priority, not cutting holes and keeping original head unit was. A real easy install with just a constant 12v wire, an ignition 12v trigger and just speaker wires needing connecting, the Amp cost about US$44 Heres a video of how it sounds / works All the interior refitted All ECU wiring now tidied up, hopefully car runs OK so I don't have to open it all up again! I also added a (Blue) ECU power light to kick panel Next job is tidying up engine bay Things left to do include Buy and Fit remote booster under drivers side guard Buy and fit Brake lines to front of car Buy and fit Trans cooler lines Source, buy and fit trim clips for various bump strips and chrome strips around body work (originals were broke) Source, buy and fit new steering rack Gator as mine are split Paint radiator tanks Black Fit remote brake reservoirs Remove front engine cross member and have welded / tidied up and refit Get engineers approval License Enjoy

Lovely job.

^Thats the plan George....if I cant handle having the factory engine, i will have one that performs better but looks like one at least Another small progress update First off, as part of 'Operation factory engine bay' I painted the radiator from its shiny polished alloy to satin black Heaps more boring, and better Transmission cooler lines fitted...please note no purple or blue anodized fittings or braided hose used....only black! Also note the lack of sump still, which is the only thing stopping me from starting this thing Another little thing that needed doing, the exhaust temp sensor wiring has always been hanging down low, now attached to gearbox inspection plate Turns out I don't need the sensors to run the engine, but there in there now so I ran some fake wiring up to the harness so it looks better for the license inspection folk..... Mounted the Transmission level dipstick, required me making a new mount as the !UZ one was never going to work in the confined space I have. Also note in background ECU wiring harness which I'm currently tidying up, I cut the hard plastic cover from it as it was sitting up way to high, I need something more flexible, so I can bend it down and around out of sight more....but what do I use?....its 40mm in diameter, and I cannot slide something over it, and I cannot find split convoluted tubing in a size that big....suggestions? Action shot!....filing Radiator with water...exciting...the trans is also filled....no leaks so far Tidied up the Gearbox cross member which was bare steel and not boxed in previously....my first real welding!....I think it looked great....right up until I put it in the vice before the paint had fully dried and left the mark you can now see  I might just add whilst removing the gearbox cross member the captive nut broke loose from the bodywork, which is inaccessible...F#@#$&&%$K!....which brought about my 2nd bit of welding, I bought a 12mm bolt, screwed it into the now bare hole, cut the head off and welded in place. Next up was another part of the 2 steps forward 1 step back process which has been this build.....I never realized up until now the car never locked in position when in 'P'....it could still be pushed!? Turns out I had the cable pushing the selector the wrong way so 'P' was '1' and vice versa. Now in fairness to me the car has been on axle stands 90% of the time, and the mount that adapts this cable to the sump only logically fits in one place as seen below so I presumed it was correct But the cable and mount must suit a shifter where the cable attaches to the shifter above the pivot point so the cable pulls rather than pushes the selector Anyway I made up a mounting plate to the bell housing and mounted the bracket to that. I also added a 'Skoda' sticker I had lying around, which should impress that humorous bunch at the licensing centre no end..... Another gratuitous glamour shot as it was outside again....I think its going to look fantastic when the ride height is sorted again :yup: Next up I am supporting the engine and dropping the whole front end out to have, blasted, strengthened, tidied up and painted black (I don't like the alloy suspension arm look it has now it didn't work as envisaged)

So progress has been slow, but things have still happened...slowly. Terminal bus bar to tidy up all the new found wiring associated with an injected engine! I was owed a favor so had a few chips, scratches and pressure dents fixed I had made in the course of this build, plus a whole car buff. Looks pretty now! Then it was straight up in the air to drop the front end out. Now its off to have engine mounts boxed, the hack thru the cross member, and steering rack relocation tidied up Should have that completed early next year. whilst that's off being done I think I will mount the remote brake booster and front brake lines to make life easier for myself for a change

So a quick update on this thing Engine supported by engine crane and front end removed Remote Brake booster fitted under drivers guard Gas struts to bonnet fitted, from a VT Commodore....bolt straight on...5 minute job! Crossmember back after being modified for lowered steering rack Steering rack with new rack boots, from a Holden Gemini, again a perfect fit on the Manta! Front end back in the car A quick before and after shot...note the broken coil spring! Cleaned up a lot of the original rusty nuts and bolts All brake lines now fitted Remote Reservoirs fitted Still needs a good clean but the engine bay almost complete, beware of fan sticker added just for that illusion of originality So really its just the Sump I am waiting on now then I can start and run it (touch wood) Brakes I will bleed tomorrow I am also going to fit some new seat belts, just so it looks better when I license the thing as the current ones are a little slow to retract Hopefully have a start up video in a week or so

Loving the project so far!
How have you corrected the front geometry to address the bump steer caused by the rack relocation?

How have you corrected the front geometry to address the bump steer caused by the rack relocation? Well...... Once its all Licensed I will be fitting Rose jointed competition style Adjustable Tie Rod ends, with which I should be able to have the 1" Rack drop dialed out. Something like this Problem being Rose Jointed Tie rod ends are illegal in Australia on a Licensed road car, so to get it licensed and for it to not drive to badly in the interim I have raised the front of the car a few inches using VW Amarok (!) front springs this has leveled the Tie rods off again. (and made the car look stupid!) I haven't driven it yet but hopefully its acceptable for now and I can get it licensed alright

Thought i had better update this thread! I got my sump back Yay I had to trim the pickup a little for it to fit But all fitted up, sealed the gasket, filled with oil, no leaks. But then Went to fire it up and no spark! Checked a few simple things with no luck so I did what any self respecting male would do and gave up! From there I moved onto Track Rods I ordered a pair of adjustable ones from COMPBRAKE in the UK Couple of issues I have noticed when fitting, firstly the standard Tie Rod end is Tapered, the new ones are not, hence the new ones wont fit all the way thru the hole in the Stub Axle..... Secondly the new ones appear to be to long, on minimum adjustment they are about 10mm longer than Stock ones, and they adjust out from there..... Basically there curse word, but will do for now until I can replace them with something better Standard vs Adjustable Minimum adjustment, looks similar in length but Rose Joint Screws fair way into Adjuster, far more thread in Standard item. Extended On the car with wheel roughly at straight ahead Because the Manta stub axle is tapered from around 14mm to 10mm at the top and the bolts that come with the kit are 1/2" there is now some slop from the tie rods before the steering moves, I think I can eradicate it for now, but its not ideal.... Still with it all back together and new 550lb Opel Manta group B tarmac rally springs in the front, this is how she will sit. Just got to get it running now and I can drive it! Theres also a few oil leaks to sort, one being the rear extension housing seal on the A340 transmission, when jacked at the front it leaks oil, I'm guessing from the shunt the donor car had...... Anyway so close but its going back into the corner of the garage as I'm off to the UK and Europe on an Impromptu family holiday next week to make the most of your 'now' week pound

No the steering angles and turning circle should remain unchanged, it certainly seems fine 'pushing it' around. I lowered the rack 40mm and lowered the track rod ends 40mm to match so hopefully it shouldnt suffer to badly from bumpsteer. don't worry I'm Australian, so there will be driving videos with Burnouts

God its October already and i've only just got this thing started, I say i've but I gave it to a workshop in the end as there was no spark when I had finished wiring it all and by that time I was well and truly over it! In the end quite a few issues were stopping it from running, which is good and bad, its good as each little issue would have P*ssed me off no end, buts its bad because the workshop bill ain't gunna be cheap First of all there was no main power feed, with these older cars the ECU etc loose power whilst cranking, that was sorted pretty quickly and the car should have started right there and then, but no, there was a fueling issue as well, return line back pressure, first off it was believed to be a kink in the metal fuel line on the motor but that did'nt fix it so the tank was removed and a vent added, this solved that issue. Go to start again, now it has no spark again  3 hours later it was found to be the cam timing wire had been pushed thru to far from the front plastic cover and was rubbing on the cam belt itself and worn thru, I sent down a few new ones off my spare motor. Now it has spark but still won't run properly as 5 of the 8 injectors are seized....no worries I brought my spare motors fuel rail with injectors down, and 7 of them were seized as well!...in the end they were all made to work. So anyway it all has to be put back together now and a few things neatened up, I went down first thing Friday morning to hear it, there is no radiator connected so it cannot run for long and every time I went to video it my phone kept coming up with an error and cutting out....which its never done before  So after the 3rd attempt at him starting the car so I could get a short video this is the best I could manage....it cuts out just as he revs it up  and if your listening on your phone it sounds like a 2 litre!? Anyway it should be back home next week, and be fully driveable...if not legally yet
