I'm looking at some wheel dollies to make moving cars around easier. Ideally it'd be the hydraulic Go-Jaks, but for what they cost they just wouldn't get enough use. Are wheel dollies such as these at Machine Mart any good? I'd imagine the critical components here are the castors. Fine if you have a garage floor like a billiard table but how do they cope with something a little less than perfect? Dragging them over gravel, craters and rocks would be daft, but they need to be able to withstand the odd rut without folding over. Any experiences / recommendations?

I've got a set of 4. I found I could easily work on my Range Rover when under the carport (8' wide) by pushing it side to side. Also useful as engine / gearbox mover ! Neighbour recently borrowed a pair to unload a front damaged / suspension missing VW T4 camper off a trailer without any problem. Wheels are small so whilst they will cope with tarmac, slabs , rough concrete etc gravel is too much for them when loaded.

I have them and I once did dragged a cappuccino shell, on its side, on a home made frame, down my block paved driveway by myself. Yes they catch on the odd rut, but its easy to rectify

I have a set of skates and Gojacks, they work okay on slightly pitted ground but there is no chance there will move on gravel. The main issues with Gojacks is that the mechanism can stick and the lever arms are prone to snapping if you are too forceful, the plus side is that there is no needs to jack the car up first to get them underneath, they will also not work on some very low cars and wont work with wide wheels. I also made a large skate using wood pallets and some large castors which I use for body shells. The skates get a lot of use as engine movers.
