i plan to re ring an engine for the first time , google suggest ball hone /flex hone are way better than the 3 legged jobbies with stones on , although they seem hard to find in the uk
what do you use /reccomend for a diy job
plus any links to home rebuilds would be good too

a 3 legged hone works fine , just run it up and down quickly to keep it all even and keep the cylinder oiled up , then clean it good after,.

The key thing - with either method - is to try to get the angle of the honing marks right (30-40 degrees IIRC). Too far one way and it'll burn oil, too far the other way and it'll wear faster.
Bear in mind that you are, as you say, de-glazing the bores: Your average drill-powered hone won't correct problems with the bore (taper, ovality, wear ridges, scoring). With either a flexihone or a 3-legged hone, you don't want to take much material off; just enough to scuff the bores to a matt finish. This allows the new rings to bed in - if you leave the bores too smooth the rings will never bed in and it'll always burn oil. Bedding in the rings takes a few applications of heavy throttle very early on in the running-in process.
Honing, on the other hand, uses much more precise (and expensive) tools to remove the machining marks from the boring machine and to leave the bore straight and round; it takes off loads more metal, and isn't what you want to do when replacing the rings.
Dave Baker of puma racing has written loads about honing - his website isn't online any more, but can be accessed via the wayback machine. He's also been quite active on pistonheads (as pumaracing), giving good advice about engine work, particularly w.r.t. a Mini engine that came back from rebuild smoking like a chimney.
