Hi everybody! My name is Lorenzo, i'm 22 and i'm from Turin, Italy. In a couple of weeks I will be getting my first "really mine" car, a car I love even if it's rubbish for most people, a 1996 Peugeot 106 phII 1.0i in absolute poverty spec (apart from jeans interior) which used to belong to my grandad who has quitted driving due to being 89 and to not have good sight anymore. The car has done about 80000km which doesn't sound much but it has never received much care from the p.o. At least it is in very good nick body and interior-wise. Plans are: wash it very well, sort leaking rear brake cylinders, see if it has other faults, fit a stereo and speakers (never had one installed) and, in any case, get it running properly by the end of may when its revisione(=MOT) expires. And, most important, pictures of the car. They are old but the car is always the same I hope my English skills are good enough

Great cars these, handle well so are fun and also cheap to own as long as the rear suspension stays in good order. Good first car for anyone in my humble opinion and I'd be interested to see how you get along with it. Your English is better than many a native so no worries there. RWD ford wheels will fit nicely...

Really like poverty spec 106's lowered, would look good on 106 Rallye steels. Your English is good mate, as said, better than a lot of natives.

Thanks! Suspension seems ok, about rallye steels I like them a lot too but they are 14" aren't they? This means i can't fit them cause i have only 13 inches in 145 or 155 homologated ( stupid laws) plus i have 3 bolt hubs on the car so alloys are hard to find too. Do you have any advice on good disks and pads? An improvent in brakes would be welcome...

Looks tidy, I do like a 106! My first car was a poverty spec 1.1i and I loved it I've now got a 1.6 rallye. Shame about the 3 studs and 145/155 law, kind of limits your options a bit, rallye steels are indeed 14" and 4 stud.

Don't think they do any bigger discs or calipers for 3-stud, I'd just fit good quality stuff

We need a certificate from the car maker, and then go to a technical inspection and all this costs and you have no certainty to pass the inspection, i think i'll fit brembo "serie oro" disks which seem to be cheap and not bad and ferodo or trw pads

They'd curse word their pants if they saw my 306! And this is not the only stupid regluation about cars we have! When you buy an used car, to get the name of the new owner registered on the car papers you pay a sum which varies depending on the car's KW, but for this tiny 37kw 954cc car i'll pay about 250€

Got the car and insured it two days ago. Today I was free so decided to go look for some audio equipment, bought a Sony CDX-G1000U and two 13cm decent-but-no-brand speakers for a reasonable 100€ and fitted the lot. Checked fluids and everything is ok, changed all 3 wipers as they were super old, found out windscreen washer doesn't work but fuse is ok so maybe a bad connection or the pump itself. Next Urgent jobs are a proper wash and a check to brakes, they emit noises and under hard braking the car steers slightly to the right.

Washed car, it now looks much younger, it's unbelievable! Tomorrow i'll go to the peugeot dealer to buy some parts: radiator bottle cap, windscreen washer pump and fuel filter. Found out annoyingly that there is no plastic protection inside the rear right wheelarch, this means dirty water from the road comes inside the boot when it's raining, at some point some body shop worker must have decided it was not needed. Problem is peugeot doesn't supply it anymore so i'll either put a piece of duct tape or look into scrapyards for the spare part, we'll see...

quick update: changed windscreen washer pump and radiator cap. The pump was unbelievably expensive! 44 euros The fuel filter will be installed by the mechanic as it is in a position almost inaccessible without a car elevator.

Second update of the day: got the brakes serviced in the afternoon by a quick and good mechanic. Rear cylinders and shoes, front discs and pads and new fluid. I didn't expect the front discs to be worn but they were, and a lot. It changed the behaviour of the car! Fitted TRW parts btw

Looks very tidy, such a shame you can't slam it on Rallye steels. Any plans? No plans at the moment, i'm just gonna run it (almost) daily and enjoy the low fuel consumption and the happy car it is. I just have to remove the instrument cluster soon, as some of its lightbulbs aren't working (the right side is completely dark, luckily the speedo is on the left) Maybe in the future i'll look for some better tyres in 155 width (now the car has a mixture of kumho and kleber tyres in 145, and I don't like them, particularly the kumhos) and maybe i'll do something about its massive body roll , like front and rear ARB. I would also like some alloys but 3-hole-13-inch alloys are very hard to find . I am just noticing how long geared this car is, it recahes 75kph in 2nd, 100 in 3rd, and more than 130 in 4th. I guess if it had more power it could reach very high speeds but then do you whant to reach them with 13" 145mm tyres, small non-vented brake discs, a VERY bad tracking and so on?

Have you guys any advice on how to properly clean the engine bay? It's never been cleaned and looks really nasty. I need something that doesn't destroy rubber parts, as I was first told to use white petroleum but I think it is a bit too aggressive.

Bad and good news update, let's start with the good ones: -The car has done over 3000 faultless kms in the last month, getting up to 84250 using very low fuel. Now the bad: -I replaced some broken bulbs in the rear lights and found out water gets into them, due to perished rubber seals behind the lghts themselves. Such seals are not sold separately from the light so i don't know what to do to fix the problem. -I managed to crash into the tailgate of a pickup, you know how the story goes: (very)wet road, a downhill sloping bend, not eonugh safety distance, a small car with no anti-lock brakes and very small tires, a line of cars, someone two cars ahead of me brakes suddenly, the pickup does the same and i do the same but too late. Bam. Luckily only the bonnet was damaged, it's going to the body shop tomorrow to get it straightened and polished, a repaint is too expensive for me now but i can't stand to see my car in that condition. For the occasion i will also get the rear bumper properly mounted again (one of the mounts is broken) and the engine bay professionally cleaned after 18 years of dirt.
