All suggestions welcome here. I have an opportunity to get back my herald! But it relys on the imp starting and getting through an Mot before sat.
It's on Lumenition - sparks are good Timing as has been tripled checked Is got twin strombergs - fueling set to two rotations out from full (imp site suggestion)
It will fire off easy start but won't run. I guess it's a fueling fault but if any one has any tips is really appreciate it.
Car has been off the road for 18months after it burnt out a valve and it now has a new (second hand) head on it.
ARAGH!! HELP!!

Double check the plug leads are in the right holes and go to the right plugs - easy and quick to eliminate.
Check the fuel pump by cracking open the feed to the carb - turn the engine over, look for a good squirt of fuel as the pump pumps. Have a cloth handy to catch the fuel.
Presumably it ran OK on those carbs before the head came off? Choke and throttle cables reattached properly?

Cabels are all good and car ran fine on these carbs before. Will double double check plugs, leads and gaps again

I would second the stale fuel and sticky carbs. Best to whip the carbs off and give them a clean out. Modern fuel seems to go off much quicker the t'owd 4 star.

Plus are quite dry and don't smell of fuel unless I open the carbs to the point the needles want to fall out

My Imp had starting problems. Turned out to be duff inlet manifold to head gasket allowing air in.

I've often found that the float needles stick when the carb hasn't had any fuel through for a while.

Progress tonight. Carbs stripped, fuel checked. Timing rechecked. Compression. . . Err now where did that go. Head off again, pistons / ring are fine but no compression through the valves on all 4 cylinders. Going to whip the head off and check the springs arnt stuck / valves jammed open. As they must be somehow?!?!
Looks like my day off is going to be busy.

What? Did you have compression before you took the head again? You must have if it would start with easy start. What makes you say there's no compression?

The thinking is the valves are jammed open in the replacement head, it was purchased and fitted with out a review as it was said to be good. I'll know more tomorrow once it's off. . . 3 days to get it sorted. . .

I feel your pain ! I have an imp too , and some twin carbs to fit - I have been told they are no good without a four branch manifold exhaust ? I hope you sort yours ! I'm no expert but it sounds like lots of fuel and no bang - coil ?

I don't understand - if it's the same head that started when you used easy start (in your first post) then you had compression at that point.
Did you check the fuel pump is delivering fuel? Not got a badly blocked filter between the pump and the engine?
Again, how do you know you've got no compression? Did you do a test? What readings did you get?

I think Roy was exaggerating a bit on the starting with easy start thing, it might just throw the odd flame out the exhaust, I could put my thumb over any of the spark plug holes and when turning the engine over there would be no pressure at all.

Ok, that's helpful to know.
Pop the cam cover off and turn the engine over by hand. You'll soon see if any of the valves are stuck. If they are, squirt plenty of plus gas around the valve stem, give it a while to soak then to the extent you've got space, give the valve spring a sharp tap with a hammer and drift. Might just be enough to free it off.
Presumably you're happy that the cam is timed up OK relative to the crank position with the head having been changed?
