Frankly, I've bought a bit of a dog. Nah, not if those pictures you posted are anything to go by. Needs some attention to get it up to your high standards, maybe... What's going on with the ABS? I broke a couple just before Christmas and have an estate I'm not fond of sitting so if you need any bits...

Right, not as bad as I thought. Got it up in the air and all the bushes seem fine, may have been a bit hasty. Changed the steering damper and you would not believe the difference, do that first!
So I've returned the other bits, not doing them for the sake of it.
It does drive better, but I'm still not sure it's for me. I think if someone came along with a good offer I'd sell it to be honest.

That's a great looker for the mileage that's on it. On the basis of your post above I've ordered a new damper for mine. It wasn't on the list of bits that someone on one of the Benz forums recommended but your symptoms sounded like mine.

Thanks guys.
Battles, I took a mate of mine who knows Mercs out in it yesterday and he had a drive, he reckons the root cause of it is tired rear subframe bushes which are about £40 for a full rebuild kit, and bad tracking.

Nice one, I'll look at that after the steering damper and ARB bushes. A few people have told me that these are sensitve to bad tracking so I guess I should do that, too. Hope you've got your mojo back for this now.

I asked about the rear subframe kit when I was in getting my damper (£31 from the dealer) and ARB bushes, they said there's a front kit and a rear kit. The front kit is £70, the rear kit is £26 and there are two other bits required for the rear at £36 each. Can you check that out with your mate? I don't know him from adam but I already trust him more than the M-B parts guy The effing pass-side rear bearing started grumbling while I was on my way to the dealer so I'll be getting that sorted first...

Sorry the rauchsilber saloon didn't work out for you. My rauchsilber saloon is back on smooth riding form after swapping the ARB bushes and the damper, thanks for the tip.

No worries man, glad yours is sorted. I love the 406 I replaced it with, I thought it'd just be something to run around in for a while so I could find something else, but I'm chuffed with it. Gonna keep it for daily/caravan use and finally crack on with the 205.

Love pugs mate, and I just wanted a big, comfy daily that was good for towing, tough and economical. 406s are great value just now.
