1992 2.5 TD Mercedes-Benz - my first restoration

Hello everyone,

I have this w124 for the last 7 years, it's a great car, no problems in all this time. But it's now time to do some body work on it, I have a little rust proble, nothing serious. Here are some photo of my Merc.

Yes, it has some great extras, like ASD, automatic air conditioning, airbag, electric windows. But if it had automatic transmision was perfect. This is the reason that my daily car is an Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed.

Hello everyone,

Today I did some work on my w124. I removed the left wing and all the plastics from the body looking for rust and I found some, not to much but it's there. Hopefully in the next days I will change the front door an fix the jack points. And I gave her a good wash under the plastics.

Yesterday I took apart the right side wich looks much better than the left side, I also removed the spring, shock absorber and the suspension arm, witch will all be replaced because they are long gone....all original that came with the car 22 years ago. My major problem is the spring rack that is welded on the down wing, is not to rusty but is detached from his position.

New updates,

I cleaned the rust around the spring rack and cut the areas that were to rusted






Soo, my big problem is with the weld....with electric supertit or superbaz I am pretty good, but with mig-mag I am rubbish, tomorrow I will begain from the start, and try to figure it out







I also manage to get the right side wing for TD models and some side panels that are in very good condition (my side panels were clenched to the doors and wings)

Love the car, it was hiding some rot.

Not impressed with that welding though, nowhere near strong enough for suspension mounting. Do you use gas?

Hello, yes I am using Co2+Argon gas, I will remake the welding tomorrow. As I sad I didn't use mig-mag before....soo I will practice first on other metal...

Please add a re-enforcing triangle above the spring mount also, if the welding on that mount breaks at speed it will be game over for you.

The welding will be ok, otherwise I will call someone else to weld for me. Safety is first...

Try uphill welding to get more penetration.

I read some tips for welding...so the problem was that I worked outside and it was windy that day and probaly the wind blowed the gas away. I will try again when it will be nicer outside and after that I will move the car inside. Thanks for all the tips.

Hello,

I gave up using the mig mag welding machine because I found super thin electrod supertit for thin steel. I forgot to take pictures with the welding, but no worries I have the right side for that,  but I made some pictures with the brushable seamsealer that I useed for joints and after welding, I used BODY 999. I gave a good coat of underBody protection BODY 950 and an accident happend half of under body protection went on the ground, my BREND NEW SPRAY GUN broke....

Hello again,

I finally finished the front left side, it's going very slowly because I also have to go to work. So I decided to remplace the spring, the shock absorber, brake disk, brake pads and a cone. I also removed the red paint from the brake caliper and painted with zinc paint.

I almost finished grinding and cleaning all the rust on the front right side, witch was much worst than the left side. A few pics:

To this, clean and solid




And I am starding to get quite good at welding




And painted and sealed
