Hello, I'm working with a standard 8 at the moment, having a few problems getting a spark, checked the obvious and nothing jumps out,(tried changing coil etc) does anyone know if a moggy distributor unit will drop straight in? they look very similar but i haven't checked drives to see! and ive got one on the side that i know is 100% a good un!

Check to see if there are any part numbers on them. Are they the same? I would think that the Morris Minor had more than one type of distributor fitted throughout it's lifetime.

thats a very good point, ive got two moggy setups and both are identical, but i could have just got lucky! il have a look early next week, cheers for the reply!

Both Standard and Minor probably have 25D distributors. There are likely differences between the vacuum and mechanical advance profiles of each but those parts could probably be swapped over.
But if you're not getting a spark then have you checked/changed points/condensor/rotor arm and also check to make sure that the thin wire inside is not damaged/shorting?

I'm not getting a spark at the points themselves, ive changed coil, replaced that thin wire inside the dizzy because it looked poor, i havent changed condensor cos i didnt have a spare so that shud b nxt on my list if i can find one

There have been issues with poor quality points, condensers and rotor arms from suppliers. The Morris Minor forums are littered with threads about them. Have a browse on there and see where they're getting the good parts from. Edit: Try here www.simonbbc.com/distributors |

I'm sure you've checked, but have you checked there's a supply at the switch side if the coil? Next thing I'd look at is insulation in the distributor - are the bits of plastic insulating the right bits? The flying lead from the condensor and the low tension lead should be touching the spring on the points but be insulated from the post that secures the sprung end of the points to the points base.

ive added a power supply to both sides of the coil to see if it encourages anything but nothing, condensor lead and other one are linked in the same way that the moggy distributor is!
il whip the unit out on tuesday and physically see if they look the same, a unit i know works perfectly eliminates everything bar coils!

I would echo the above post. Check and double check that the plastic (or fibre) insulation is not allowing the low tension supply to directly earth through the securing screw/nut and washer on the distributor base. Don't add a power supply to both sides of the coil - only the switch side. Another dumb question - the points do open and close as the cam lobes rotate? |

I ment ive tried both individualy not at once haha, i know the live should go to the oppsite to the cb side in theory! And yea points open and close as they should do, havent had a feeler gauge inthere but theres enough of a gap to at least spark

For anyone that read, turns out the base wire had cracked inside the coating! Whilst it was out to replace a moggy dizzy will drop in using the standards spacer and lock plate!

Glad you got it sorted. As with anything electrical you just have to follow the live lead and see where it disappears!
