Porting cylinder heads

Morning folks. I was hoping one of you can tell me where I can get the burrs for porting heads? Machine mart sort if have them but they aren't very long.

Tool station halfords and wickes don't have them.

Any ideas?

Carbide burrs remove material fast but you still need something like fine grinding stones and sanding discs to tidy things up. Also be wary of cheap items as burrs aren't cheap so a £10 set off eBay aren't going to be anything like a long lasting / good as, say, a £15 Garryson individual burr. Engineering merchants are a better place than Halford , B&Q, Machine Marts etc for quality items. It's a case of getting what you pay for and a decent set of burrs etc will cost probably as much as a second hand already modified head. If you use a flexi drive then you don't need extra long items - plus it make the whole job a lot easier than mauling a drill or die grinder around.
It's a long time since I modified a cast iron head but do remember thinking "never again" Alloy heads aren't anything like as bad.
Word of warning is it's an unleaded head be VERY careful not to touch the valve seat otherwise it'll have to be a professional job to get them recut as not a DIY option like leaded heads. You can't use either a cutter or lap the valves in with cutting paste - they have to be ground as hardened seats.

I always use the below kits from Summit. They have quite a variety of porting kits available and are so, so much cheaper than the rip off kits from Frosts, even when you take into account the P+P. Take a look at their web site, it's so tempting!!! Just ask Blackpopracing!!

Good call , they look much more substantial and the post wont be to bad . Might be small enough to come as regular mail and not incure handling charges etc .

For flap wheels, arbours, abrasive points etc. I'd recommend www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/

However they do not stock cross buffs, which you may require should you desire to take things to the next level.

Fair play for getting stuck in yourself, porting heads can be very rewarding. Though if you haven't much prior experience do have a good read up on theory and be careful not to go mad in practice.
Be vary wary of any secondhand "ported and polished CVH head" half the stuff I see knocking about on Ebay SHOULD be worth less than an unmolested head on the basis they look so mucked up.

Incidentally I do have a nicely ported CVH hemi head surplus. If the spec were to suit your need I'd be prepared to part with it...

It would pain me to sell it knowing the time and money that went in but such is life.
Essentially it's been treated to -

Full port and polish with a focus on low end and mid range torque for use in my old drift car. The ports have been reshaped and smoothed considerably, the inlet and exhaust ports along were taken to a high polished finish, following which the inlets were buffed back down to a suitably rougher finish for optimum results.
The combustion chambers have been de-shrouded and polished also.
There is a matched and worked on DFT / DMTR manifold to suit

Full recon - dip, pressure test, new guides, reground seats and light skim for which I have the supporting receipt of circa £300

Kent CVH33 Cam and alloy vernier pulley - though this is well used and has a belt groove worn into it!

Having a look around at other offerings, I'd think a price of £250 to be fair?

That's the sort of figure i was expecting. Which is why i will never buy one. The Zetec conversion is the same cost and gives same power and probably more torque and more mpg.

Really puzzles me why folks price these the way they do.

This isn't aimed at you fella, it's just how i find it.

CVH tuning parts are fairly cheap in my books. But yes, there is much tut out there selling for too much IMHO.
Cost / value wise, to re-produce the above head -
Good head to start £20-50
Machining £250-300
Kent cam kit £400

+ a considerable number of hours @ whatever one's time is valued at
+ consumables.


I would disagree regards the statement regarding Zetec conversion though. It may sound good when you say it and appear cheap at first, but there are a few headaches to overcome, and costs will quickly spiral if the engine needs work or is taken beyond stock.

The CVH is a capable little engine, the only problem is that 80% of 'em are knackered and in dire need of a rebuild.

If you fancy a head to practice on / recon I've a few here you can have for the price o' a pint....

Thanks for the offer Reliant ut i have plenty of cvh heads and blocks to play with. Which is why i know they are pretty poor.

In all honesty i'm only messing about with this cvh because i got bored. I am actually half way through getting parts for a boosted zetec engine. I am only after 300bhp and the turbo i have is more than capable of gaining that. I just need to get off my and pick up the engine so i can start gapping some rings

I've just done my rover v8 heads, used a dremel but it burnt out before i managed to finish so had to get myself a die-grinder, just a shame my compressor isn't quite up to it! Got my cross buffs from www.headportingsupplies.co.uk/
