Hmmm don't want to rain on anyone's parade but they left a very good friend of mine high and dry years ago by sending him out a renewal, him accepting it, paying the deposit over the phone and thinking all was well. Queue him getting stopped by the plod, chasing up brentacre for the cover note which hadn't arrived ( only 5 days after taking out the policy) to be told he wasn't insured as it hadn't been put on the system. He proved the deposit had been paid, proved who he spoke too and proved it was 100% their fault. The company completely washed their hands of it, refused to help in anyway and claimed they would not standby him or even write him a letter to explain what had happenned, basically told him to "speak to your solicitor to see if he can help". It left a very bitter taste in my mouth and I'd personally never use them because of this but I will say in their defence they have been in Swansea for years and the owner used to be ( maybe still is) a car fan, drove a golf rallye iirc and actually came across as a reasonably decent guy so it may have been an isolated incident because you wouldn't be in business for long if it was a regular event. Speak as you find but let's just say if it wasn't for the power of the laser printer and a civilian in the police station he would have had 6 points and a few years of hiked premiums , more importantly someone could have been hurt and he would have been left high and dry uninsured. If anything it just proves you must check the MID and your documents immediately.

Shame your friend had a bad experience. We chose Brentacre because they have the best reputation of anyone working in this field. I'm sure there are going to be bad experiences with every company, and I knew as soon as I put the thread up there would be people point out their flaws. However I've not come across another insurance company that has such a consistently good reputation, so that is why we went with them and feel comfortable guiding our users to Brentacre.

vaughant - my name is Simon from Brentacre. That is a very serious complaint you mention and after struggling to find anyone in the office who remembers this from the details given, I'd like to investigate further to see what exactly happened, who dealt with it and how. Would it be possible to email the person's name and postcode, or ask them to email directly to simon at brentacre.co.uk so I can look into it further.
He wasn't prosecuted therefore he must have been fully insured at the time he was stopped. Had he not been covered, he would have been prosecuted for driving without insurance regardless of the reason why. The MID database does take a few days to update, however as you say it was a renewal, there's no reason why he should have left the database in the first place unless he either cancelled his insurance or allowed his policy to lapse and had a short period without insurance. As he was insured, when stopped, he would have been asked to bring his documents to the police station within 7 days, he shouldn't have been detained unless there was another reason for stopping him.
All the above is guesswork at this stage of course because I have very little information, and I'd like the opportunity to look into this in full. Obviously I can't disclose personal details or instances on a public forum, but I can at least check to see whether correct procedure was followed or if mistakes were made. So far, it could go either way due to interpretation of the facts.

My renewal is due this weekend, so i gave Brentacre a call. The lady who answered was very polite and knew her stuff, but, if you are one of the million plus people who live in a Leeds postcode, they will not quote for you.

As a modified vehicle specialist, we can cover Leeds if the car we're quoting on is a modified/specialist vehicle. We have delegated authority with a number of insurers but we can't be competitive with standard cars in a few areas.

Instead of just searching your site for the answer, I'll ask my question here so that others can see; do you insure younger drivers, such as the 17-21 y/o bracket? I know of quite a few modified & classic (specialist) insurance companies who won't consider insuring those under 21, or even 25.

Trying to find insurance for my modified van has always been a problem , they quoted me nearly a hundred quid less than the company I've been with previously , that'll cover the cost of a pair of Toyos for the back rims !

As I stated it was a number if years ago, I'd say late 90's iirc where MID AFAIK didn't exist or certainly wasn't enforced. I'm not prepared to say anymore on the matter without the permission of the person concerned but safe to say he was left up sh1t creek without a paddle with a poor attitude from (John iirc??) the boss man at the time completely washing his hands of it. It was a mistake, and mistakes happen admittedly but sadly I'm very old school and once I, or someone I respect gets poor service I won't use that company again. I've dealt with insurance companies myself when I had my own business and its seldom the fault of the brokers like yourselves I must say, their horrible people to deal with very few exceptions so I admire your company for taking the grief away from these lads, you deserve a medal. Its past history now and maybe shouldn't be brought up but it's always stuck in my mind the seriousness of it all and what could of happenned if someone had been hurt badly etc and I felt I should comment. Its history now and the fact you've concerned yourself with it shows it was most likely an isolated incident and that you take any complaints seriously which in my book is great customer service.

Thanks for the reply. I feel there are some explanatory details missing but as you say it was a while back and it would be unethical to swap personal details about a third party. I could come up with several details which could flip the issue, but this again would just be guesswork and not particularly productive.
I come from my own business as well so I appreciate there's not enough time to waste if there's a known black mark whether justified or not. But do keep us in mind on the off-chance you fancied a punt. The company has gone from strength to strength and my job now is to streamline the technical side of things to accommodate the growth and increase efficiency.

I've been with brentacre 2 years running now and they're excellent, just a shame you don't do multicar policies! Out of interest, if I phoned up now and told you guys I'm also on the RR forum, would you give me some money back?

Hey speedy, as I always say, the worse thing that can happen by asking is that we say no.
and with that... no. sorry :-p
But mention it on your renewal and we may be able to sort something out.

Would this also be why I couldn't get a quote on a standard 1992 Granada Scorpio in London E7?

As I've said before, I've got nothing but praise for Brentacre. Been with you since I was 20 (I assume your rules have changed, as I insured my old Mk2 on my 20th birthday), and apart from a year off (Flux. Pah!) I've always been with them. Never ever had an issue, and seeing how big you are now compared to 8 or so years ago shows you must be doing something right!

They quoted me loads more than what Tesco did as I had no real NCB to mirror. Very odd. I'll never understand insurance. Really helpful company though.
