Hey folks, Thought I'd ask on here as it's not model specific, bought a Mk1 Golf recently and when to take the wheels off to service the brakes and found this: Out of interest, here's the car (with silly exhaust): Now I've tried two types of "locking wheelnut removal" tools, basically reverse threaded impact sockets, one Irwin type and another twisty one I found to be popular on amazon. The issue I'm having is the clearance between the bolt and the wheel is too tight to get the correct sized gripper on and the hub is so deep I can't get in there to weld anything on it as I would if it were sticking out... Can anyone possibly identify the type of nut I need or a reference for identifying them or suggest another tool/method other than the above. Cheers folks. Sam

I know its pretty obvious but have you checked in the wheel well, some people tend to throw the lock key in there. If not the only experience Iv had is having to drill it out which is probably not what you want to hear. If you do go down that route a decent drill bit can work wonders. Sorry I cant be of any more help, half asleep at the mo, maybe some wisdom will come to me later.

Bash a crappy old socket in there over it, had many a success doing that.

Its a mcgaurd locking nut mate and think there about twenty-thirty different types of pattern for them so good luck mate
Be better off removing whole hub and wheel and grinding wheel stud off from behind if ya can

As said above, that looks like a McGuard. A tyre place took all 4 off my sister's Mazda 5 for £20.

Modern fords such as 06 era focus have them as std fitments May be worth asking anyone ya know with a ford if ya can try there key Long shot I know but failing that most respectable tyre places can usually do them for small fee

Doesn't look like a mcgaurd one to me, more like a copy. That said any garage with a decent wheel but remover (Dynomec is the one I use) will have them off in a few minutes a wheel.

These are wheel Bolts, not nuts, so no option of taking the stud out. I know drilling is an option but that sounds like a full days work.
They are Mcguard lookalike, or the real deal but as you say, there are quite a few types. I wondered if there was a (slightly dodgy) guide to identifying which is which.
Alternatively, I will take it down to a tyre place and pay them to remove them. As I said, I've attempted the same kind of tools that they would use and had not luck, maybe I just need to be a bit more brutish with them...

Three options left really A smash a tight fitting socket over it if enough room around the wheel bolt
B if you have access to a mig welder then weld a suitable size nut on the end of bolt then use that to remove it (may damage the alloy with welding )
C pay someone else to do it whilst you sit drinking coffee
