hey guys i know this is retro rides but got a bit of a weird problem to suss out and i know there are a lot of smart guys on here
So my mate has this issue with his car, its a 2003 A4 Tdi think it is a 130.
He bought it about a month ago and drives it at least 40-50 miles a day every day and he has been loving it, going like a train thinks its a great car not a single problem until now.
He took the 20 mile trip home from work a day last week and it was going perfect. Then he went out to go to work the next day and it wouldnt start and he has only managed to get it started once since then and it was running like **** and kicking out loads of black smoke.
What you guys think? I have had a few ideas but i want to know what you guys think. He has left it at his mechanic who doesnt seem to be getting far with it and has told him his catalytic converter is blocked <_<
Cheers

Engine Coolant Temperature sensor? A faulty one can cause the car to exhibit similar symptoms to the above.
Any fault codes, BTW?

he says it had an orange light on the dash but his mechanic who has had it from friday hasnt put it on the code reader yet! he was messing about with what i think was the EGR valve (i wasnt there, just going on what my mate told me) then later told him his cat was blocked.
the car was literally going perfectly then next time he came to use it it wouldnt start, and he only got it going that one time a few days later.
i said to him that something so sudden was probably a broken wire or sensor or something electrical, and to get it on the code reader but i don't know havent looked at it he lives like 30 miles from me so i havent looked at it myself.

Get the codes read, that's my advice. Otherwise I'd say the mechanic is just guessing.
I've had a collapsed catalytic converter on a couple of cars, and it was a gradual process, i.e. the car's performance started to go down over a period of time. I doubt that that's what wrong with this Audi.

Agreed, given that there is an ECU which will more than likely tell you the vague component that has died/misbehaved it should be the first port of call, it takes minutes at the most with OBD2 compliant things.

Do you have any service history with the car?? cam belts have been known to slip, belts are at 80k intervals. water pumps collapse too, and are generally considered a service part with the cam belt.

Atmo V8 Power . No slicks , No gas + No bits missing . Doing it in style. Austin A35van, very different------- but still doing it in style, going to be a funmoble

yeah if i had it at my house i would vagcom it but its 30 miles away I'm just talking to him in work
hes taken it to this mechanic he knows, i was like bro theres no curse word way your cat blocked overnight lol will await the mechanic reading the codes if he ever does, hes had it since last friday ffs. cam belt slipping could be one.
it has like 152k on it my mate mentioned that it has a sticker saying when cambelt was last done but i don't think theres history apart from that. but we know its been done once at least so i guess its just coming due one at 160k
yeah I'm well aware of the water pumps have had a few of these motors myself lol but never thought of it causing this issue lol could well be a cambelt issue now you mention it. it seems to fit well that it could be that.

It needs plugging in to see if its farted firstly ,pointless guessing as could be anything , turbo diesel pump snapped timing chain etc etc
If it was playing up prior to not starting then it should have a fault stored

the mechanic read the faults, he said it had three electrical, wiring type faults and he has sent it to an auto electrician.
i don't see how a car that was running perfect could get three wiring faults overnight

Probably only one fault affecting 3 components. Seems silly to have to point it out but electrical faults do literally occur overnight or similarly the car can be running fine one minute and then not work at all the next. It's easy to get water into connectors which corrodes terminals. Then control units start failing and you get your 3 for 1 electrical fault showing up on the diagnostics.
