I'm waiting for them to turn up (amazon one day delivery thing) Not expecting much but i've been looking for ages and just want some cheap fun.
I'm wanting to fit it as separate to the horn which I'm sure will be harder? but i don't want to loose that crappy 80s horn the Escort has.
someone mentioned the timing being built into the compressor? i thought that might be the case which means i wouldn't be able to alter it to fire all 5? just think that would sound great.

If you want dixie horns, you will need a decent sized compressor the ones they come with (Off fleabay) run out of breath, Always wanted a BIG Train horn, but you need 24 volt running rather like lorries use it can be done, just need the right sized big ass compressor running off 12 volt hows that work then sinse the timing for the notes is built into the compressor that comes with them ? for legal matters..seperate "off road use only" switch should do it I have had a few off the shelf dixie air horns, (I like em) and every one the compressor provided runs out of air half way through its the size of the compressor which you need to address, more air pushed through the longer you can hold the horn! Mine with the one they came with kinda sounded like a record player on 45 - then flicked to 33 it just faded out mid way if you get my utterly useless explanation Although I could be wrong, I always brought the cheapest set being a bit of an Arkwright

Klaxons are totally legal. Having witnessed the court based red faced traffic cop that got that wrong, believe me, a Klaxon can be used as a horn...

I used to have one of those klaxons on an old vw and passed mots no probs. Another vw was treated to one of those daft tarzan/wolf whistle various noises gadget....mot time and my actual horn decided to pack up...mot guy just used said gadget and said that as long as there was an audible warning it was okay

I'm sure it was in an 80's Bentley Turbo R there was a switch and you could select either a high or low tone. Technically then that's illegal as the options were either/or not both together? That said it had been Quentin Wilson's car at one point so all sorts could have been hooky!

Roof mounted lights aren't legal for road use. You are SUPPOSED to have some sort of circuit that means they can only be operated when stationary. Well what about something similar for Dixie horns - maybe a relay linked to oil pressure switch so the horns will only sound if engine not running. Then you could have an override switch to they would work with engine running at shows, off road, private events etc.

In Germany, it's legal to have more than one horn, as long as they sound all together. Melodies are illegal. Legal compressors have one air outlet, and the air is distributed by Y-shaped pieces. Melody compressors are bigger, they have a small transmission inside which drives a slotted metal disc, which turns slower than the compressor. They have 4 or 5 outlets (depending on the melody), one for each horn. When the metal disc rotates, the slots open always one hole at a time, so the melody is played. Quality horns come from Italy, the brands are Fiamm, Stebel and Fisa.

They aren't legal for UK road use so that is probably the reason why difficult to find. Strictly per "the letter of the law", as below, unless fire, ambulance or Police vehicle it's even illegal to have them fitted but doubt you'd get caught unless using such on public road. Regulations 37.4, and 99.4 Construction and use regulations. PNLD references. D2574 & D2576 37.4. No Motor vehicle shall be fitted with a bell, gong, siren or two tone horn unless it is for fire, ambulance or police purposes. 99.4. No person shall sound or cause to be sounded a bell, gong, siren or two tone horn, fitted or otherwise carried on a vehicle (Whether stationary or not) Paul H That part of the RTA is to prevent idiots impersonating emergency vehicles, and refer specifically to sounds which would traditionally be emitted by such a vehicle, such as a bell/gong, siren, or 'nee-naw' two-tone horn. It does NOT cover dual-tone horns (most car horns these days are dual-tone, my brand new up! has one listed as an optional extra!), nor does it cover musical horns/chimes. With decent defence you would negate any charge brought against you in respect of an alleged offence, of course it does not prevent any nuisance time caused by an officer ignorant or poorly educated in the Law.
