So, trying to sort the bodged wiring out on my '81 924....radio and clock have now stopped working, fuse no 7 has blown (which is apparently for the hazard lights? Which work okay) replacing the fuse keeps burning it out. Is this likely to be a bad earth? Would that cause the fuse to blow? All was working fine until a few days ago  |

Hi, no on the contrary it is almost a dead short to earth. Try replacing the fuse with a bulb which will probably light up, then go round checking the wiring or components that are being fused for defects when you find the source the bulb will go out.

Okay cheers  just seems weird that it's just gone?...really annoying me now, PO is an engineer/facilities manager...scary looking at the bodges on this |

It's not strange that it's just gone. That's always how electrical failures occur. The cause will be a wire rubbing on something so the copper inside has been exposed and it is now short-circuiting. If it's not that then it could be a component on the same circuit which has failed.
I'd probably try disconnecting the radio and then putting in a new fuse to see if the radio is causing the fault. Radio wiring is often a cause of electrical problems. So while the radio is out check the wiring back to the OEM section of wiring to see if any bad insulation tape or crimp connectors are causing the circuit to short.
If not the radio then take a look at the clock and wiring to that.

Cheers, radio is already out, will check the clock wiring tomorrow if it stops raining ....putting a fuse back in just keeps blowing ...guessing they've both been wired to the same fuse? Hey ho |

Sorted! Spent 3 hours renewing terminals and bodged 'splices' (read: tied together cable and insulation tape!)...all is good, clock up and running, no blowing fuses and apart from the dodged wiring to the fuel pump causing alarm all is sorted apart from having to wire the radio in again now, back on it in bit |

Have you checked the multi terminal thing behind the glovebox? There's two and they tend to corrode. They look like little CROWNs.
