Something like one of these? www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003XDN58KWhat are the legalities? If I chase after someone stealing my car, apart from me doing time for cold blooded murder are there any other things to take into account?

I'm not sure how you're meant to track it? An alternative is buying an iPhone 3 and hiding it behind the dashboard and then use 'find my phone' application.

You put a pay as you go sim card in them with a small amount of credit on it. You can then text it and it will reply with the cars GPS coordinates/info. You can also set them to automatically text you if the car moves outside a predefined area, and most allow you to trigger an immobilizer remotely.
I like the idea of them, and I'll probably be ordering one for each of my cars in the near future. I'd be curious to know how the police would actually react to you giving them the info from it though, if they'd take it at face value and go look, or if they'd question how worth-while it is for them to chase signals from a cheap unofficial/unapproved product.

Well, I just purchased the one on Amazon - and it appears to be quite a well made kit - will a hell of a lot of extras. I can wire it into the fuel pump so once the text is sent, it switches off the pump - another thing I really like is the geofencing option. I can program in a set of co-ordinates and the car will only drive within them. If you go out of those co-ordinates it switches off the fuel pump and sends you an SMS. Here is what I got for 50 quid - Aerials are a bit big so will have to see where they can go. This could also be the ultimate wind up device .... Thinking more of geofencing a friends car without him knowing - "Every time I pick my gf up the car breaks down right outside her house!" Its also easy to not wire in those options - I don't want to add possible problems, I just want to know where the car is. It would be funny to have the radio pre-tuned to Radio 3 with volume on full blast every time he parks up outside, or to sound the horn constantly .... Oh the possibilities

Hardly discreet or easy to hide though. That style of GPS aerial needs to "see" the sky doesn't it? Where can you put that that a thief won't see it? And plastering "GPS tracker" on it doesn't help in that regard either.

Finding anything with RF outs on it is suspicious - It could easily be removed from the housing and placed in a spare box - As long as you put it in an excellent place it doesn't matter. The GPS worked indoors so doubt if it needs to be stuck on a window.

We fit trackers, whether it be subscribed or self track. The problem these days is actually getting the police to do anything with the info you can provide them. There is a case in point just last week a mk1 escort was taken locally, the tracker fitted showed it was in a travellers site just off the M25. The police drove to the gate, it wasn't visible, so the wouldn't act upon the information any further. Abit scissor, paper, stone. Tarp' bets cars!!

Tarp' bets cars!! almost correct - they did go on the site but as you say, couldn't use the accurate tracker info as reasonable justification to actually look in any buildings or containers - a complete joke which meant that even though they were literally stood next to the car they couldn't actually see it (or recover it) they left the site and gave the thieves plenty of time to rip the interior of the car apart looking for the tracker that had obviously made the police visit the car was only recovered several hours later by continuous checking of the position and once the car moved off site the police were called again and this time the car wasn't behind a door so they could see it and recover it so trackers really do work well the police, not so much

Stuart , have you got your car back from the rozzers yet , can you tell us the story ? Is anyone getting done for it ?

got it back, getting quotes for repairs and awaiting the assessor from the insurance
there will be lots more security added and it WILL be back better than it was as soon as I can find the bits I need to replace and get the bodywork sorted
Not sure I'll ever hear of anyone being done for it but they did do forensics and the cops must hopefully be keeping a closer eye on the obvious culprits. Forensics will take a week or two they said - if I hear anything I'll let everyone know

wait wait wait so basically the device sends an SMS message when taken outside a pre-determinded zone... then you can choose to send a trigger SMS back to active an immobiliser or whatever you want??? Like a smoke grenade?
