ford escort mk3 1.6 ghia vv carb swap

it has been mentioned that it might be a good idea to swap the vv carb on my mk3 escort for a weber for a mk4 I have seen several on ebay, one like this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370949081772?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 are they a straight swap or is there further work required to get it all to work properly ??

that's no good for you , that looks like it has an electric second choke , you want the earlier version , youll also want the inlet manifold and throttle cable bracket , will make such a big difference in performance,.

just fitted a brand new weber conversion from webcon, the proper conversion with all the instructions including a manual choke conversion and I have to say it's transformed the performance and general running, idles smoother and accelerates better, no popping and frapping when cold, well worth the £150.00 plus a couple of hours fitting

What did you do for the fanimold? Did webcon supply it?

it fits to the existing inlet manifold you have to bolt an adaptor plate with 2 studs on that the air filer housing screws onto supplied in the kit, fits great and the only way you can tell is that the filter is now held on with the 2 nyloc nuts and not the screws, also you do away with a heater pipe for the old auto choke, I've kept all the parts so could go back to original if required... but why would you, it runs so much better, just bought a timing light and am going to check all the timing as it seems to cough a splutter a bit when it's hot and your giving it full throttle, it's great at low revs/ lower speed, I've set the mixture as per webers instructions and checked it with a gunsons spark /mixture tester but it has had a new cambelt and I want to make sure the timing is ok, I think it's set at 12 degrees btc at idle ??

12 degrees for 4 star/ V-power and 8 degrees for normal unleaded.

The coughing when warm is likely to be because you may be using normal unleaded and the timing is set up for super. Try a tank of super

The only thing with backing the timing off on an XR3i is that it seems to dampen the power delivery quite badly. I would be tempted to stick with Super if you can, assuming all other CVHs are like this. .
