I had one of these when they were fairly new, being 19 (just realised that was 19 years ago!!)I killed the gearbox, 1st Accidental "modification" a gearbox from a 1.3 MEASTRO! went like a scalded cat all the way to around 95mph then ran out of revs. good work, I'd love a MK2 golf again one day

*Goes searching for a Maestro gearbox on ebay* EDIT: What items would I need to buy for a basic service? Are wiper blades a failure? (One flew off the car the other day, when I tried them!) And would I need to cure the water leak before taking the car for the MOT?

Sorry for the stupid questions. Just wondered if it was indeed worth doing the service (As it will no doubt fail, due to have been sitting for over a year......)

Sorry for the stupid questions. Just wondered if it was indeed worth doing the service (As it will no doubt fail, due to have been sitting for over a year......) you'd be surprised. i won an old mk2 mondeo on ebay once for £37. it'd been stood for 10 months, got in it drove it home and it passed a test the next day haha for the £40 odd quid I'd chuck it in for a test and see what you're dealing with after than, you can end up spending that on service bits to then only find its rotten as a pear in areas you cant see underneath at a pre mot. any local garage will do it, just pick the closest to you given its not been used in a while

Well do you want to fix it up or not > If the answers yes . then it will need doing at some point .You have to start somewhere with it rather than just pussy footing around it .

Just a couple of points, looking over the above... Wiper blades that don't clear the screen are a fail. Might be worth adding them to your ECP order if they're really cheap? I'd clamp off the 'in' hose to the filter with mole grips or similar before removing - just make sure the new one goes in the same way around! Water leak may get mentioned as an advisory. I'd be tempted to do oil and oil filter just because I hate the idea of forcing old oil thru the system - and it may fail on emissions. Rocker cover gasket is just a case of undoing all the bolts on the top, disconnecting a couple of hoses for clearance, and exposing the oily goodness... If the old one is cork, it may want a bit of scraping - I use a wallpaper scraper... Again, oil leak may be an advisory, depending on severity, but I wouldn't worry about it at this point.

Thanks again, lard (and the others) When scraping off the rocker cover gasket (with a blade of any sort) do you have to be careful against knocking chunks out of the head? And you speak about an "in" hose. Would that be the hose that's attached at the rear of the in-line fuel filter? (As the tank's at the back of the car......) Cheers

Yeah, you do have to be careful of that...the rubber gaskets you get these days are good at filling all the gaps - I tend to find the wallpaper scraper has just enough flex, but if you're skilful you could try a stanley blade - I can't peel potatoes without skinning my knuckles, tho.
Your fuel tank logic is entirely correct..clamping it off will mean you lose as little fuel as possible...

Huzzah! I got something right! *Goes off rummaging for a wallpaper scraper*
EDIT: I've bought some engine flush to try and alleviate the noisy tappets. Should I dump it in, run the car for a bit, then do the oil change quite soon afterwards?
Thanks

It should say that on the can too But don't worry if you leave it in there for a bit too long, I had engine flush going around the engine of my Jag for about a week before I finally got round to changing the oil.. Just read through this thread from the start and the Golf already looks a lot better than what you started with, just keep at it and you should have a very nice car indeed As for the MOT/service conundrum, doing a service beforehand probably won't help with passing the MOT much apart from emissions, but if the car has been stood a while and you want to be using it frequently, I'd just get on and do it for piece of mind I just did a quick service on the Jag after I bought it as it didn't have much record of any servicing being done for the past two years lol

I suppose it will have the same instructions on the can, but as I'm fifteen miles away from it at the moment (car's in my mate's garage) I just can't read it! (Hence my very vague and stupid questions.....) And as I work seven days a week, this project's going to take a lot of time (So I'm trying to get everything right in my mind, so I can really crack on when I do get to have a small amount of time with the Golf) And from one "Ad" to another, many thanks for the kind words, matey
