hi everyone
i'll try n keep this short, and I'm sure people have asked this a million times but.....
i'm looking at throttle bodies or carbs for an mx5 engine. trying to do it on a budget and was wondering; can you use bike carbs as throttle bodies? I'm guessing they would need a few minor modifications but still....?
I could just fit carbs to the engine but want to keep it fuel injection
cheers

Fairly sure you could just use bike throttle bodies? Not sure how up to the job their injectors would be though

more than up top the job for most engines, you need to design a decent throttle quadrant and preferably have them solid mounted, hoses introduce issues.

well I have a smashed up ninja zx750 in my collection of "useless junk" (girlfriends view not mine ha) I'm guessing theyd be okay air flow wise as bikes rev a lot higher?
all the carbs on it look to be in top notch condition, just wondered if I didn't plumb any fuel lines to them, and used the engines original head mounted injectors, whether they would work as throttle bodies? maybe take off the float chambers and cover it over as well just to neaten it up

I have heard of carbs being used as throttle bodies with injectors after the carbs, I think that was using weber or SU carbs though? but the principle would be the same. I have no idea how well it would work though, no doubt someone more knowledgable will be along soon Though with the relatively cheap price of bike throttle bodies I'd be tempted just to get a set I know that will work ( though obviously its not as cheap as using free parts )

Have a Toyota 20v 4age sitting around, was only thinking the standard ITBs look like they could be made fit other engines, Plenty for breaking over here too

Using bike carbs as a pure throttle valve/body is perfectly possible, but it's a bit half if you ask me Try to find proper throttlebodies with or without injectors (and keep your own stock in head injectors) and work from there. If the fuel flow from bike injectors is not enough you can always tweak the fuel pressure a bit. Just be sure you don't run out of pulsewidth/dutycycle and check resistances so you don't swap hi/lo impedance injectors.

would I have to block off the carbs fuel jets n stuff, or would it not really matter?

Heres my manifold using the existing mx one that retains the stock injectors And the finished result on itbs (excuse the red tubing)i just metal puttied the injectors holies in the itb. As said before its going to need a megasquirt including all the gubbins tps, ait, wideband to run it. There are a few jdm cars that use carbs.

A mate did his mx5 with gsxr 600 bodies and the plug and play mega squirt . Bike injectors were ample for the 1600 engine and sounded lovely but a lot of effort for the power it made and a bit of a pita to tune

Agreed.... Does sound really nice! Not to mention the look of it with some nice shiny intake cone thingys ha
But yeah, would it work if I used the carbs purely for inflow then? Just use the injectors I have already, because the aren't mounted on the manifold, but in the engine block itself...
Just block off the fuel jets n float chamber. Essentially convert the carbs to throttle bodies
cheers

If you were to just plug the fuel and vent lines on the carbs with a blocked hose (of perhaps connect the two together?) you wouldn't need to change or convert anything, makes selling them on if you're done with them a lot easier You could also plug the existing injector holes and run the complete throttlebodies from an FI bike but I guess you'll loose some efficiency.

Yeah.... I was just trying to find a use for them, the bikes doing nothing atm, and there's np point fixing it because they're only about 1000 pound on the internet now fully working! It would cost that to fix it
Could always find a mini to put the zx7 engine in I guess...... Or a dirt buggy......!
Hmmmmmmmm...... Haha

Or you could use both with the second bank of injectors being opened maybe by the ALED output on the megasquirt.

All the Aled wire does is allow you to switch stuff on at a pre designated time could be the a second fan fan, shift light,VVT on a mk2 engine etc. I would recommend Reverant on Mx5 Nutz if you wanted a plug and play MS,top guy and as the pound gets a bit stronger his prices go down as he is in Greece.
