Hey guys, been up a while scratching my head about this. The P5 is deffo getting a v8 of some sort of flava. The obvious choice is to go for the rover 4.0/4.6 but seeing how the correct v8 subframes are hard to come by it looks like the existing subframe is going to have to be modified. Which opens up the opportunity to fit pretty much any similarly sized engine in whilst it's having the work done. So put your collective nuggings together peeps and have a ponder. Is the rover the best idea or should i consider some other alternative - perhaps a lexus v8, a small block, audi lump? Ideally it needs to be injection and modern for every morning startability. On another note how wrong would a v6 tdi be? Any thoughts welcome, popping down to the garage tomorrow with the car to have a conflab on the subject with them. Mmmm burble burble burble burble.

How wrong would a V6 tdi be? Not all that wrong. Using a straight six beemer diesel might upset people though!
What is wrong is the person who put a FOUR cylinder turbo diesel into a Citroen SM!!

I'd vote for this on the basis they're cheap, not difficult to get bits for, have a good autobox behind them and have no inherent weaknesses unlike the other lumps - also, poked with the right stick they will return sensible economy, are whisper quiet and flexible. However, they're also very wide and the bay of a P5 quite narrow at the front, I think it'll interefere with the brake master cylinder at least so some measuring will be required V6 TDi is interesting option but again, getting those turbos somewhere could be problematic. Tape measures at dawn!

sell P5, buy P5B
Job done.
I'd like to lay easy odd that the Lexarse lump would be a real PITA to fit due to width and such, plus think about the sump, exhausts, etc. Even the original RV8 is a bit of a squeeze and has tight manifolds etc.
Benefots of fitting the Lex over a RV8 4.0 or 4.6? Other than completely killing the resalve value of your car? None I can see.
