A friend of mine has a Skoda pickup truck (i think its the same as a mk2 golf caddy underneath) which he uses for his business, he has a new workhorse van for delivering work etc and is looking to do something special with the pickup truck as a vehicel to show off his fabrication skills.
I've suggested a 900 series volvo which we are looking out for as I thought keeping it live axle would mean that the bed is still free for carting things about.
As we are chaning the engine, gearbox and rear suspension (not sure what needs changing to the front/ steering as yet) how would we go about making sure that the trucks still legit to use on the road?

Depends on how much you change, swap too much and you will need a VOSA (radically altered vehicle) inspection which can lead to the car being given a Q plate. As soon as you cut the monocoque, which invariably you will need to to accommodate the gearbox, prop and rear axle, the car will lose its ID under the DVLA 8-point system, or Radically Altered Vehicle as advised above. The car will require an IVA test to gain a new ID and Q-plate registration. What about taking a 4WD car such as Subaru, Audi etc, fitting the desired engine and making just RWD ?
If chap wants to show off his fabricating skills then he could always graft a car body onto a 4x4 rolling chassis. The Suzuki Vitara, especially LWB, is an ideal source as IFS so front diff / driveshafts can be omitted.
